According to the experts there will be a massive decline in oil in 4 years time, I know we have heard it all before but I imagine they will be right one of these days. Will Tescos have horse rails and lots of bike racks instead of car parks.

What? Decline in supply? Or demand because of biofuels?

I read that if biofuels take off, less will be invested in oil exploration/development so oil prices would go up.

Not sure that I believe any of it.

I think it's because many oil companies have overstated reserves to bulk company value.
Shell are one of the worst offenders.

In addition USA is pumping much more than it's reserves can sustain.

Should be interesting.

there are plenty of oil reserves under the earth to last us at least another 100 years (probably a LOT longer).. whats more difficult is trying to get it out... Shell and others are developing new types of rigs that have to drill at an angle rather than straight down (to put it simply)...

im with clarkson on this issue, no need to panic yet but of course we should plan for alternatives too..

Believe me do not panic at all. The human race is the best in terms of adaptation and innovation .So when the oil finishes another kind of fuel will be manufactured. there are loads anyway. electricity, biodiesel, alchohol ,glucose, ethanol or nuclear LOL

There are numerous locations in the North Sea that remain untapped because of cost. What about Alaska and dare we mention off the Falklands? :)

Just off out to stock up in case we run out:devil:

Which experts?

Recent developments in drilling technology will make it possible to economically access deposits that have previously been ignored. Basically they now have drill bits that can be 'steered' in 3D (travelling horizontally etc.), rather than simply going down in a straight line from the surface.

Considering the rickshaw with the 6ltr V8 and Chinas new found love with the motor car I am getting the bike out this weekend and fixing that 5 year old puncture. Oh the info about the 4 years was on the ITN news last night.

I think you have to bear in mind, that at present value, petrol is cheaper than it was20 or 30 years ago pro rata. For example, when I started drinking at 18, beer was 1/10 per pint, petrol was abour 5/- per gallon. Beer is now £2.50+ per pint and increase of over 25 times, petrol is around £4.30 per gallon an increase of only 17 times, or petrol should be around £6.25per gallon. There are probably things that have not incresed as much, but I am afraid I was not really interested in other prices:D :D Oh! scrumpy cider was 7.5d per pint, how much now:eek: My point is, if oil was becoming scarce, the prices would surely have increased more significantly. I did find a comparison chart on the net once, blowed if I can find it now.

An interesting read is the link http://www.oildecline.com/index.htm major points are,
95% of any oil has been discovered (difficult to say that when you have not found it all)
80% of the world has only recently started using oil,
The Russian oil fields will start to run out in 6 years
Maffs Aston uses most on the this site
The Saudi 5 Mega fields produce 73% of the worlds oil and have peaked.

I'm very much a believer in the adaptability of the human race, as and when we do actually begin to run out of oil (which I don't think will be for a very long time yet), we'll either find a way of synthesizing it or replacing it with something better.

and as for the environment... screw it, that's what I say ;)

You get my vote for Prime minister. When the dinosaurs were roaming, did Man commit suicide?. No we lived around it.

Which experts?

Exactly.

If you'd read the Economist during $10/barrel oil in 1999, they knew the experts who could explain why there was too much oil in the market. Pick your expert according to your beliefs.

Never mind - we can get free energy from water you know!!! If only it hadn't been suppressed...

Remember the millions of people who took the X-Files far too seriously? IMHO it started out as a TV entertainment show... and that is all it is.

Ditto the Da Vinci code - just a novel (with several formulaic successors)

You may have guessed by now that I'm not into conspiracy theories. :)

It does depend on who you listen to but when I get stuck in a huge traffic jam and think this is just one of many roads that is full of vehicles in the world surely we can not sustain the drain on oil now that the really big countries like India and China are in the oil race. The amount of oil left is slightly immaterial because there are many that will use it as an excuse to tax you out of your car as the greenies take over the world. Couple of more lbs pressure in the tyres and I am mobile again.

There are way too many experts in this country that can not get their field of expertise right.
The millenium dome was thought up by an expert.
Predictions of the moon as a tourist attraction Arthur C-clarke expert
The nuclear experts who claimed to perform nuclear fission in their bedroom.
The paeditricians who sent women to jail wrongly for cot deaths

In what way was the dome faulty? It was the mis-management of the whole project that was wrong. Typical Govenment bungling.
What makes Arthur c Clarke and expert, it was only his opinion.
Those particular scientists were liars, not experts. They just wanted funding.
Again only the opinion of a few bleeding heart liberals.

I've only come back at this to demonstrate that your post was a bit flawed in it's reasoning.

well the mismanagement was done by government experts, like the ones running the NHS.
So can you define an expert then?

Anyone who needs funding these days just has to start a project aimed at reducing global warming. so we are right to assume most of them will not be experts then.

They normally have some kind of fact based research to back their claims, not just one persons opinion.
And it's no where as easy to get financial aid for green projects as you make out.
I nearly said 'think' there, but I don't think you believe it's that easy either, it just makes a good story.
