Just had my E320 estate serviced and the garage noticed a lot of oil deposited in the tray. He said I will need the gasket replacing soon.
I've noticed it is losing a bit of oil but nothing major.

He refused to do the work as he fitted a replacement wiring loom a year ago due to the original which was rotton and the engine was very rough. He said if he were to disturb the electric wires by replacing the gasket it may cause problems again.

Just wondered if there is anyone near Altrincham cheshire who could look at the car for me for their honest opinion.

Thanks

3 places the oil can leak out.

You need to determine whether it IS the head gasket for sure - it is common to dribble from the front of the headgasket and down over the alternator.

IF it is that, then I will give you a tip that cured mine.

Make sure that the oil level on the distick is no more than half way between MIN and MAX parks on dipstick when car is on level ground.

This was an instruction issued in a Mercedes Technical Service Bulletin around 1995. It cured my dribble.

The other two places are:

1. from the seal at the front of upper engine timing chain cover join.

2. from crankshaft belt pulley front oil seal.

If he replaced the loom then there should not be a problem disturbing it - it is an old type loom that could cause problems - are you sure he replaced it?

The other place they go is at the rear corner on the offside - quite tricky to see from above - but check if you have oil running down the back of the block and to the ground over the gearbox mounting bracket.

Ian Walker is only 45 minutes North of you. He does W124 head gaskets for breakfast, dinner and tea..

Yup - give Ian a call. He is good at what he does and will only do the work if it is needed, not just to make money.

Ensure you ask for the Biscuit Request Form :bannana:

Sounds like he is going to do it for fun (free)......:D

Dont take it to somewhere that has not done one before; you will have other problems; just not worth the hassle.
