For anyone that thinks their car head gasket might be faulty, a sniff test with a 4 gas analyser should detect combustion gas in the coolant but if you don't have access to one then a block test will give a pretty definitive result.
I tested a cooling system today on one of my cars I've just acquired, which is suspected as having a head gasket blown.
The blue liquid turned pretty green and there were lots of bubbles, so it's conclusive the gasket has gone.
This is a diesel car, a petrol engine makes the liquid turn yellow as it contains more CO2.
Bizzarely, this car was taken off the road seven years ago for this fault, after having a brand new radiator fitted by a garage to see if that was the reason for the overheating.
