Anyone had a headgasket replaced recently? Just interested in the pricing including the labour.

I've just had the head gasket replaced on my 300te. I paid a little under £400 and this included new valve stem seals and the head was also skimmed. I've been told that this is cheap, but my local Merc specialist only charges £35 per hour. So, I would expect any quote from a London garage to be £50+.

Top end gasket set £69, time to do it yourself 10 hours (did mine in the drive). Why pay an agent to do it when you can do it yourself? The advantages, you get to know your engine. You know the job has been done right. You get to examine the engine bores for wear. Dissadvantages. You have to rely on the weather. Your wife / girlfriend will get really fed up with you. Your off licence will love you. Your Chemist will have to stock up on pain killers and plasters. Your finger nails will resemble black half moons.

please feel free to add to the list ha ha

Thanks for the info guys. George Fraser wants roughly £550 to do the work. His labour calculation is good, just his rates that I find stiff. Not sure that he plans to change anything other than the gasket itself.

Hi website shows "old" labour rates, which seem unavailable. ;-)

K Langdon.

Which specialist do you use in Bristol ? Been trying to find a decent one.

Hi Pepe,

I use Steve Bateman, Unit 4b, Central Trading Estate, Bath Rd, Bristol. Tel: 0117-972 0600.

He was recommended to me by a couple of guys from work who have Mercs. He's a Merc/Volvo and Italian Car Specialist.

Just to warn you that if you do meet him, he might appear a bit strange, ie a very slow delivery with his speech, etc.

I was told about that both he and his main mechanic appear slightly odd characters (typical mechanic?!?), but they do a good job at a reasonable price which is the most important thing.

Happy hunting!!

Yes ,
I phoned him last week to get a quote for some work but had to go out and missed his call. Must admit he did sound very very tired/pissed off. one or the other.

Pepe,

I think Steve Bateman may have got some type of medical condition or something and that's the reason his speech is slow.

The people that I know that have used him say he's honest and reliable.
