I have used normal car polish with my Meguiars orbital polisher - had no probs.

Thanks Tudu,

Looks like all paths are leading towards buying a rotary polisher :D

Now all I got to do is drop broad birthday present hints :bannana:

Safest machine to use is the Meguiars, about £130 plus pads and polish.

Cool!

This of course opens a whole new can of worms about pads and stuff :D

Nigel, is the Meguiars device the same in operation as the Porter Cable?

Yes the same, except meguiars is 240 volt and the porter cable is 110 volt.
But if you have a 240/110 transformer already it will work out cheaper to buy the porter cable from Autopia in USA

Thanks Nigel!

Do you think that an isolating transformer is of benefit when using a polisher outdoors?

Thinking that if an isolating transformer is the best way to go safetywise then the fact it steps up the voltage opens my options to the PC even if it is 110V....

It steps the voltage down to 110, but as you wont be polishing the car in the rain and as there is not a chance of cutting through the mains lead with the machine either way is fine.
Bit bear in mind that the 110 volt polisher's mains plug will have to be removed to fit the transformer will proberly invalidate the warranty.
Also the mequiars is a better machine than the standard Porter cable unless you get the UDM model
