Hi guys,

Have a 02 Vito 108, and the heaters for defrosting the window is terrible. You can just about feel it blowing up at the front window. Eventually it does defrost it, but takes ages.

Is this common on them or are they usually ok? My mate had the van before me and said his apprentice used to put pens on the top and knows that the odd one or two rolled in there, could this be the problem, if so how do you get under the blowers on the dash to see, is it a big job with all the dash coming out?

Cheers.

Hi ya, you have a blocked pollen filter. Its an easy job to do if you dont want to put a new one back in. It takes some people hours and others 10 mins, its all down to your flexability

Martin

P.S i can talk you through it if you want to do it yourself

Yes, cheers mate.

I have a mate who does quite a bit for me re. my van. If you briefly explain what and how i have to do i would appreciate it as it's relly cold in my van for a long time before it warms up!

Thanks

Hi ya, briefly the pollen filter is located at the bottom of the heater and is accessed via a little cover which is next to the clutch pedal. You need to slide the cover off and then pull the filter out breaking it carefully as you do. Be very carefull as the filter will be covered in dust and crap and can cause irritation if breathed in. Replace the cover and hey presto you have a powerfull blower again. I will take a picci tomorrow of where the cover is as its not easy to find unless you know what you are looking for. You might need a point nosed pair of pliers to initially pull the filter out

Cheers Martin

And yes for all doubters it can be that easy:)

Cheers mate.

It seems to blow out of the front vents not too bad (onto your face) but the front window one there is hardly anything blowing up to defrost the window.

So the filter should do it, should it?

Cheers mate.

When it is working correctly it will blow an absolute gail in your face out of the centre vents that will make your eyes water, It blows slightly less air up the screen i think because the vents cover such a wide area but it is still a substancial amount.

110-1056_IMG.JPGAs promised a couple of piccis although not very good it gives an idea of where to look. The cover to be slid out is behind the second bar running across the van for want of a better explanation. You can see it in the picture 2 as it has crosses in the plastic molding. All that needs removing is the trim around the lower centre console (the bit with the heater vent in it) which is held on by 2 10mm plastic nuts.

Have fun Martin

I had a 99 vito for ten years and this was one of the weak points on them, its something you have to put up with, PITA at these frosty times. We also had two 2001 Vitos, all exactly the same. I now have the new Vito which is much better. We also found the footwell never really got warm, again you have to live with it. Our pollen filters were regularly replaced but it made no difference. When defrosting there was always a wide strip either end of the windscreen which took an absulate age to clear. Another problem on the 99 vito was that the brakes were total sh*te, I had to warn people when they borrowed my van because it was so easy to overshoot T junctions. In general though the vito served me well.

Well all i can say is that i have never had a problem with defrosting the windscreen and not had any problems with wide strips down the sides. The air going down to the footwell is easy to adress as the "tubes" that feed air down there are obstructed by the underdash cover. If you cut out a bit more of the underdash board you can get it nice and toasty. Actually replacing the pollen filter with make only a small difference but removing it all together makes a huge difference.
You can get the brakes to work well but you have to stay on top of keeping them clean and free, mine improved greatly with new discs and pads and a bit of time spent sorting the back brakes out.
Its all a matter of what you expect from a van and what you are used to, i came form a rattly old tranny so the vito was like a luxury limo and has never dissapointed.

Cheers Martin

Hi Martin, we had three vitos and all were poor at clearing the whole winscreen. I dont know what year yours is, maybe they made improvements after 2001. The cold footwell was also common on all three vans, I even blocked up the centre outlet that blows to the back between the single seats to try and improve the air flow to the footwell. Out of three vitos mine was the only one that had poor brakes, they worked fine when you needed them but had no feel and lacked assistance, dealer looked at them many times but couldnt find a problem. Our other two vitos had good brakes, no problems. During the 10 years I had my van the discs and pads were replaced many times. The backs always seemed to wear as much as the fronts. I always made sure everything was clean and free. Fluid was regularly replaced as well. Mastercylinder was also replaced but didnt really improve the situation. I had an old beat up escort van before the vito, so I agree with you the vito was pure luxury, i enjoyed my first vito, thats why i got another and look forward to the next ten years driving it, I must admit though I did add a few extras to make it even more enjoyable to drive.

If it still takes a long time to get hot even though you now have a decent breeze have the thermostat replaced.

No heaters

:dk:Hi guys I have just bought a vito and love it!!! But it has a problem With the heaters first they didn't seem the best but then it just stoped at first I give the dash a tap next to the heater switch and it started back up on fll pow would make a noise but know have stopped working altogether I've red a few threads I've. Taken the polen filter out checked fuses any thing else I could do? If it's the motor is it hard to change pics would be great of location an what it looks like your help will be awsome thanks :dk:

Very interesting, my new 1989 W124 takes a while to produce any heat and blows nowhere near as well as my old W202. I'm gonna investigate the Filter.
Also it finally blows heat through every vent but cold through the middle (above stereo) vents? any ideas?
cheers
