ok... before i ask the question, i'll explain what i have done.

removed thermostat and put it in a glass jug, poured boiling water over it and it opened... refitted.
cleaned the duo valves .... hot water passes thru them when heater controls on hot, and cool down when on cold.
flushed the entire system with caustic soda (worked on old 190e) and lots of gunk came out... flushed again with plenty of cold water thru hose pipe.
changed coolant for winter / summer coolant at correct mixture.

my question is.... when in car and driving... heater warms up to warm when on cycle 1....
when moved to cycle 2 its a little cooler.
when on 3 and above... its blowing cold.....
and its using about 1.5 pints of water per week... i only do 100 miles max a week
any ideas why?

any reply is a plus... as im at my wits end with it....

thanx all in advance...

By cycle 1 and 2 i assume you mean fan speed? i would have a look at your pollen filters if you have them fitted.

The O/p's heater is losing heat with faster airflow so the fan is feeding air Ok.

The problem has to be the water side of things, either the heater core or pipework is still blocked or scaled up or if there is a coolant pump it isn't working.

If the car is using water than that would sugest a leak in the system , and this might leave the heater matrix low on water and there fore no heat . Check the car for leaks when it is a full temp and pressurised

ok, just done a service on car, new air filter, oil filter, oil, plugs, & replaced the rubber seal on the thermostat housing too...and also flushed the cooling system with radiator flush.
not much change in colour from water actually....
let it run a good 15 mins on fast idle with interior heaters on hot & full blast so the water was being whacked thru the heater matrix too...
emptied and re-flushed with clean water....
put some nice red coolant & anti-freeze in her and did the right mix of water.
brought her back up to operating temp and all seems ok...
will let you know at end of coming week if its sorted it out.....

p.s. yes, i let the engine cool right off and used hot water for flushing rather than cold and cracking the head etc eh eh

thx for replies
