Heavy / No Power assistance at idle

Hi,

This is my issue:

1. From cold start, my steering feels fine. Slight excessive noise when moving steering wheel, but feels ok.

2. When car is up to temperature, and car is at idle, steering feels heavy to the point that there is no assistance, i can move the wheel 20 degrees say and theres a lot of groaning from the PAS system. If i REV the engine, the steering loosens up, and is fine. Driving at anything over 1000rpm is normal, and fine.

However low speed maneuvering tricky (I drive around a multistory every morning).

There is a slight damp patch below the PAS pump on the engine block and undertray. The level WAS a little low, so i've topped it up and it hasn't budged in 2 weeks, but the heavy steering remains.

When on full lock, the steering sounds like a scalded cat (much worse than the full lock noise i normally get).

What gets me is that the assistance is fine at idle when cold, but as soon as the car is up to temp, its very heavy (it's given me big arms!).

I've had a new steering damper in the last 6 months, pressures and trackrods have been checked ok fine.

Thanks for any help.

Air in the system? Bleed by doing 3 or 4 full lock-to-lock turns.

What about the PAS belt? Is is tight enough?

System has been bled, no different, PAS belt and tensioner is fine. Quite intrigued what the issue could be :S

I would put my money on a buggered PS pump.

Bump!!

my first post here!

I agree! came across something similar..the extra revs for the warm up are probably helping to produce just enough hydraulic pressure to the power steering system..once warmed up..the revs drop a bit and hydraulic pressure is lost..2 things here..a lump of crap holding the pulley or a dodgy bearing.

get the hydraulic pump out and give it a clean and spin the pulley, listen out for scraping noises.

good luck

Thanks both, i'll be investigating the pump when I have a free weekend :)
