Hello everyone - what a top forum. So much useful info. Am looking at buying an n-reg (w124 - i think) 200 estate. Thankfully, it's blue and not silver - this seems to be very important. Is there anything else i should be looking out for - or any better options? I understand that the 200s can be underpowered (am test driving it tomorrow afternoon) and the 300s are a better engine. Does 140,000 miles sound like a lot to you chaps?
Any and all advice gratefully received. Oh- it's £4250, by the way.

Welcome Bod :D Not sure you've got the colour right - Silver's the way to go - but I guess blue'll do  :D

Have a look at a recent thread on milage - I reckon 140 000 should do you fine as long as it's been looked after.

Welcome to the forum. I have to go with Pammy and say that silver's great - don't believe evrything you read!

140k? Ok as long as it looks as if the previous owner looked after it.

I always think its useful to ask to have the car MOT'd - even if you pay for it - its certainly a start in identifying any issues.

200 is a little underpowered depending on what ure used to. But drive it and see. The 200 engine is not as strong as the others. 140 is a little high for a 200, with these engines, gaskets and little things usually go in between 150-200. Most of the other engines i would say should give you no hassles for at least 250K. Im not saying that all 200's have problems above 150K, but the trend is for the little things to start to wear and give. The 200 is pulling a heavy car after all.

Hi

The 124 estate is one of the last real mercs, if possible seek out a 5cyl 250D or the 6cyl 300D. £4500 should get you something in the 93-96 years. Dont worry about mileage if it has a service history, these cars just go on and on and on and on. Expect mpg 30-35 from diesels 200 would be high 20's

Good luck

P.S Someone recently told me if you find a 124 diesel estate with aircon buy a lotto the same day.

thanks for the advice - the 200 i drove (my first!!) was very impressive, but i've been put off by the high mileage since it turned out the fsh wasn't so f after all. Don't really want to be spending out too much. Still - i'm off to buy a lotto ticket - i've found an e300 estate (w124). It's got 144,000 miles. I understand this shouldn't be a problem. Would a 17,000 mile gap (from 126,000 to 143,000) in the service history bother you? Should i see this as irredeemably sinister? Wouldn't want to get overexited and carried away by the rarity value.(specially since i don't know what i'm doing!) It's a trade sale.

as you can tell - i'm quoting myself since i seem to be a bit crap at getting the hang of the thread thingy. e-class much easier to handle than computers. :D

Another W124 fan

:bannana: Hello Bod, I was after a E300D myself a few months ago but there were none around.

So I went for the best petrol one I could find, and I'm not disappointed. Enjoy the car (and the economy - see another thread) and the forum.

Bod,

Welcome.

Regarding the colour - please ignore what the silver dirty chrome folks say about it - as the Chelsea fans say .... "Blue is the colour".

I know of a Blue E280 estate that might be for sale .....

As for the mileage, I've got 134k on mine (1993) and no major worries at all. The history on mine was very sketchy to say the least, but I did get a 1 year warranty - which gave me some piece of mind.

There's some folks here with considerably higher mileages, and have not experienced any problems.

Could be worthwhile getting the car checked out beforehand - AA/RAC inspection, or a Merc specialist.

Bod,

Welcome, I've only been around for a couple of months so I'm new too. All depends what you want out of the car really, I like the W124s and have seen few of them at high mileages (well over 150k) that still look good and seem to be reliable. It seems that pretty much all of the engines are bomb proof if they are looked after properly, but the diesels seem to go on and on and on (and Arist-on). If you go for a diesel, I would suggest going for a 5 or 6 cylinder lump, as they are much smoother at idle (I've owned both now). No problems from either at speed and you'd be forgiven sometimes for forgetting they are diesels with the windows shut ;).

As for colour, a dark metallic in immaculate condition does look rather nice, but I'm in the 'dirty chrome' bunch because silver is the nicest of the colours that won't show you that it's dirty all the time. Just looking forward to the point where 'dirty chrome' cars are outcast in the price guides and I can afford a nice CLK320 in silver. ;):)

Ian.
