- Sprinter 316 2005
Hi all, I am now a Sprinter Van Man, after the purchase of my very 1st Sprinter.
My name is George and live in Wolverhampton.
I owned Merc's when I was living in Munich for 10 yrs but non in UK
I've been told to deepen my pockets because the Sprinter is an expensive animal - I hope that doesn't prove to be correct.
I've bought a 2005 316 2.7CDi 5speed auto (xL xH), it came with air suspension, armoured door locks, Clifford alarm system, Isringhausen air seats, tracker, built in sat nav, etc. (I was well pleased with it)
I got it after it had been almost unused for three years, though it had been MOT'd and serviced regularly.
The speedo reading over 4 MOT cert's was only 120 miles. It had 215k on the clock. I took it for a test spin and was very surprised just how quick it was.
It was due an MOT in about 8 weeks so when I got it home I decided to give it a good going over. Nothing was to be done half hearted, if anything was suspect, I'd change it.
It needed quite a bit doing to it...
All the disc's were rusted, which is ok and expected, but around the pads the rust had eaten into the disc's so much there were deep grooves, well below the safe limit.
I bought disc's and pads all round (and replaced the parking brake shoes)
I gave it a full service, new oils and fluids and changed all the filters.
All the tyre's were perished, so put 4 new 8 ply Nexen tyres on.
The brake master cylinder showed signs of fluid loss, so it got a new one.
The brake pipes to the rear brakes were very rusty, so I put new ones on.
The air suspension compressor was struggling to build up pressure, on inspection the bore was worn out due to a very fine dust that seemed to be everywhere. I couldn't work out what it might be until I spoke to a friend who lives and breathes compressors for a living. The dust turned out to be evaporated water mineral dust, very fine and very coarse. No parts were available to make repairs so I looked at a new one from Gliderite, I'm glad I was sitting down when they told me the price! OK, I'll need to do some research then, and finally found a compressor with a better service guarantee, and 2 years warrantee, at just over 1/3rd of the cost. SO the suspension was back in action, though a couple of valves still needed replacing due to the gritty dust.
All the jobs done it passed the MOT with no problems.
After 3k miles I do have a few questions and am looking for a few solutions but I'll drop those into the appropriate section.
Cheers
George
