C63 AMG Perf Pack
Hi All,

I have been looking at a 2009 C63 AMG on AutoTrader but I see mixed information about the M156 engine.

Lots of posts about how weak various engine/valve bolts are and issues with the cam/timing.

Is this for every engine made before a certain build date?
The one I am seeing has the engine number: 156985 60 050233

In reality are most older engins 'OK' as long as they are looked after?
What signs should I look for to see if the engine has any of the issues reported?

Is there a way of getting the full VIN from the car registration plate so I can check the specs out fully?
It's meant to have a Performance Pack so I presume I need to look for option P30.

Not every engine is affected. Later engines (post 2010) had updated parts to prevent the issues. Even on the earlier engines not every engine was affected.

It’s a relatively uncommon event, however when it does happen it makes a big splash online because the repairs costs can be very significant, think £5k plus.

Unfortunately even cars with impeccable service history and maintenance records can experience these issues but when buying always hold out for best maintained example you can find.

The issues can happen at any time, but the most common mileage for the timing, tapper and cam issues to become fatal seems to be around 100,000 miles.

Buy the car with the best maintenance record you can find, and if possible find one with the rebuild already completed by a main dealer or Mercedes specialist.

Thank you for the information, the one I have seen is just over 90000 miles.
It has plenty of paperwork, I will ask the dealer if I see the car again and read over all the invoices to see if a rebuild has been done.

Actually very few affected even in the early ones
