Help a Newbie Out (please) !!

Good evening all,
I'm hoping to pinch some of your expert knowledge.

I have a company car - a Mercedes C220d / Saloon / AMG Line / Manual / 64,000 miles / FSH / Cavansite Blue....

In summary, I've been offered to buy the car as it's at the end its lease....the price the lease company are offering at the moment is £13,900. That seems fairly reasonable to me.

I'm tempted..but.....I did have to have a wing mirror replaced and it cost over £1000...so I am aware the parts are expensive.

In relation to these cars, can anybody please answer the following questions?

- Is the price offered a good price?
- How much is main dealer servicing?
- How frequently should servicing be carried out?
- Do the timing chains / engines fail?
- Do the timing chains require replacement?
- Are there any known common faults for these cars? (I'm thinking expensive items such as steering racks or engine components etc...I could get these checked out on an end of warranty check)

Thanks for pointing me to those but I'd already read them. Was after more of a what to look out for list, or, problems associated with my particular model or engine.

Many of the items you refer to are pot luck as to whether they fail or survive.

If you like the car, and it has been reliable, buy it as you know it has been looked after and not ragged...


Im not sure i understand what you mean by an end of warranty check...do you mean the “health check” completed as part of each service? An MoT will also highlight any items requiring attention.

You need to provide the date of registration to get an accurate quote. Two things likely to count against it now - 1 its a diesel 2 its a manual ---that's not me speaking its the trade. Parkers provide a free valuation service here

As a general remark with todays electronically complex vehicles, running a car outwith its warranty period can potentially land you with big bills- you may have the option to extend the manufacturer's warranty by payment of an additional fee provided the car is serviced by a Mercedes dealership or registered specialist to recommended schedules of course. Running a Mercedes yourself can be an expensive business as the main dealer cost structure is geared primarily to the company car market rather than the individual owner?

Servicing with a good Independent is acceptable and cheaper, there are some very good ones around. Pop your reg into We buy and car and get a rough idea of value, or pop into the dealer and ask what you could expect against a new one.

With respect to the 220CDi engine, my current E220 of 2011 vintage is currently on 311k miles with no issues, and my 2 previous did 312k miles each, again with no issues. Timing chain failures are very rare in relation to the number of 220's out there. If it has been serviced correctly it should be good for man more miles.

Servicing should be every 15k miles or 12 months whichever comes first to maintain the warranty.
