Yes depends on the personality!
And whether you are sat behind a keyboard typing it or actually laid on the floor, hands tied behind your back worrying about the safety of your wife and kids.

OK, I may have been watching too many movies, but you get the picture.

It's difficult for anyone to say what anyone would do in such a situation unless you are actually in that situation at that time and it is happening to you for real.

Sometimes you have to let your ego go especially when it comes to protecting your children and wife first. i had to do this but managed to save the car as well. However, i was lucky on that occasion as could have gone all wrong.

Majority of these thieves though are sh*t scared themselves and are only brave when they are under the influence of some substance making them feel invincible.

Yes maybe too many movies

I think a good monitored tracker, let them take the car, and let the tracking company talk to the police. You and your family stay safe that way.
Swings and roundabouts but let me know a tracker you recommend

In modern Mercs does the Mercedes Me act as a tracker? If it can remind you where you've parked...?

It sure can, and you can track the car too, but I think mercedes me could not be reliable enough to be used for stolen vehicle recovery.

@mounty unable to PM you but could be interested in the rotors and pads if you can share the part numbers with me I’ll let you know.

Thanks

Bit late to the party but a combination of Autowatch Ghost plus anti bump and anti-snap locks on your exterior doors wil keep your car on the driveway. I also have two CCTV cameras that cover the drive and a security light. With anti-snap/anti-bump locks (£30 each roughly for a typical UPVC door) the only way they are going to get in your house to get the keys is by making a heck of a lot of noise, and if they're not worried about that sort of brute force entry then it's time to give them the keys and code and wave them off.....

Slightly different take on this, some years ago a good friend had his immaculately restored RS2000 stolen from his locked garage. I should point out that he was the grounds man of a private estate with security gates. He lived in a cottage in the grounds and has three rather loud Jack Russell dogs, but never heard the robbers. The car was always locked even though inside a locked garage and the estate is at least three miles from the nearest decent road.

Fortunately he had an agreed value policy, but even though he had been insured with them for several years, he still had to endure several weeks of enquiries by their claims management company before the insurers finally coughed up.

On a related point, many moons ago a works rally Ford Escort was stolen from parc ferme prior to an International rally by thieves who must have known that all the works cars shared the same keys and that their bespoke parts were all stamped as such and had the wherewithal to transport their prize away quietly under cover.

I guess the message is, if thieves want your car you need to decide how much it’s loss is worth in terms of theft prevention measures?

With high-end vehicles they tend to be - and I hate to call them this but - professionals who know exactly what they want and what they need to do to get it; our very own Developer on here suffered a terribly traumatic experience when they violently robbed his E63 by smashing in the door of an evening to get the keys.

These are not opportunist thieves having a mooch about trying car door handles, they are big horrible bastards that will happily give you the mother of good hidings if you don't do what they want; you will not be "in charge" in the situation...

My car keys, every night, are on the staircase right as you walk in the front door so if someone does decide they want what I've got - here's the keys, good luck to you and see you in the next life!

^ Couldn't agree more. John was put off AMG's for life after that incident.
I have Ghost fitted and two locked doors to get through but anyone that determined can have the keys. Its only a car and its insured.
I wouldn't put any family member, or myself at risk for a car.

Don't blame him, I think I would have been too.

Certainly with cars that have been lovingly restored (for example) I can see the thinking behind trying to protect it but I genuinely will never care for a car so much in my life where my personal safety - and that of my family - would ever be put in jeopardy not even 0.1%.

I'm considering what security to get for mine - I had a Ghost on my Audi but the issue with it is that if they are Pros that come to your house for the car and can't start it, they won't immediately leg it so you're at risk of serious violence. That's why I'm pondering either a tracking system which is cost effecting and includes the remote immobilising, or Clifford Blackjax which will let them get away a short distance before stopping them. Both these options reduce the chances of violence. I'm erring towards the Blackjax as a tracker just doesn't pay for itself in insurance savings...

I have a StopTrack tracker, Ghost system, anti-snap locks all round the ground floor, CCTV and a Disklok for overnight parking. None of these things are a hassle and the sum total spend was around £2.5k after insurance deductions. I understand that if you're targeted by pros who will break into your house with cabers, carrying blowtorches and machetes and thumbscrews then none of this matters but I still believe that this level of cheap and easy security will mean that there is a miniscule risk (not zero risk) of being a victim. YMMV but that's my take on things. I don't understand anyone owning cars like these who doesn't spend modest amounts of money mitigating theft risk to the lowest possible level.
Ultimately, if you want the risk to be zero - don't own a car.

I’m at work just now and will be until the new year at least. I don’t have the part numbers but mine was a 2012 W204 with the PPP if you do a little googling.
