Mercedes C180 Kompressor
Hello, I have a problem with my c180 kompressor 2005. I tinted my windows a few months back and my central locking only works from IR when held close to the drivers door. I have now removed my tint that cost me £150 but my problem remains the same. All fuses were checked, any other help or suggestion?

Have you thought of changing the batteries in the key fob??? Also, if it is simlar to the W203 then the sensor is located in the drivers door handle so removing your "tints" would have been of no help.

+1 for key battery.

Do you have a second key and if so does that work at greater distances?

I have 2 keys and both only work at the drivers door handle.

I even tried changing the batteries in both keys same problem!!

Do you think it may have helped to mention that first?:thumb:

Well it's the first check any basic car user will perform "checking batteries"

I have seen a few post which brings to my attention that this is a common problem with Mercedes after tinting. From reading it seems like a RF antenna problem. Is it a problem you heard about?

It may be a basic check but many people do not carry out basic checks and when trying to help solve problems on line it is difficult to try to pin point the most logical and likely answers without full information to work with. :thumb:

If you are sure that the keys are transmitting then a Star test seems the most likely way to pin this down.

Hi

It would seem you have joined the club of coupe drivers with no central locking! Not a club I'm proud to be in sadly :(.... Can you confirm a few things please?

1. Has your FM radio signal worked fine since the tint?
2. Are you able to lock/unlock the doors by aiming your key fob at the driver door handle and pressing the fob?

As previously advised by someone else, you more than likely damaged the contacts of the Radio amplifier. This is located in the rear windscreen and works for the central locking and radio signal.

Your fault is also common if your alarm siren is faulty..... If your siren does not go off or keeps playing up then try changing fuse number 8 in the rear SAM... Tbh I doubt that your issue is down to a siren.

There are loads of threads that discuss this issue and the consensus seems to be that you may need to replace the amplifier. This also means a new rear screen In the 1st instance try and find the amplifier contacts and reattach. It might help

Thank you for replying.

1. My radio signal is crap and only goes up to a certain dial then starts over.

2. As stated as long as I point the key at the door handle it locks and unlocks fine.

3. My alarm seems fine because on occasions before I had to unlock my door with the metal key and alarm goes until I insert my key on the ignition.

Do you know any way of getting the repairs done for a reasonable price?

Thanks again

Thank you . Need to get it sorted.

I am also in this club, a new amp above rear screen and new rear screen, £hundreds from mb. If going second hand route, you need to buy whole rear hatch and get window with amp already attached transferred to your own rear hatch.

A job I have not completed as yet

so removing your "tints" would have been of no help.

It will have kept him legal though.

You should never tint front windows. They are tinted during manufacture and adding further tints makes them illegal in most cases.

The company that did the work would know that so sorry OP, they had your trousers down there.

Windows must let in 70% of light at the front. Do the rears as dark as you like though.

We return you to your regularly scheduled programming...

OMD anyway keep me posted on when the job is complete. I am suppose to see a mercedes specialist in High Wycombe area. He reckons the job will cost almost £400 Vat inclusive.

I have this same problem with my car. Can anyone help?

I had tinted my Windows myself. I did the two rear side windows first and central locking was fine Inc radio signal. I then tinted the rear heated window and my central locking range was reduced.
It has been mentioned on here before that there are two tints...one which is a metallic tint which reduces central locking performance and radio signal. The other is normal tint.
Best bet is to ask the tint man what type of tint was used if he says metallic there's your problem.
I would also add when tinting the rear window soapy water is used and it CAN and WILL seep into the antenna under the trim. I did this and had to dry mine out..
My central locking range is virtually non existent from the front but work from about 3 meters from the rear.
Hope this helps. And about a meter from the sides.
