I was driving my 638 112cdi 02 and started getting a click/tick from back left side of engine bay (if you're looking at it from front of the van). It sounds like an exhaust tick but its very quiet, could it be head gasket leaking? or inlet manifold. Smells like exhaust fumes.

Thanks for looking

I appreciate your time replying.
Is that a job for a enthusiastic diy mechanic, or is it a specialist job bud.
Can I cause more damage by never having done this before.

it needs to be done sooner rather than later as exhaust fumes can enter the cabin and it will not be pleasant,i would say a competant diy'er could do it but i would do a search titled black death mercedes and it should point you in the right direction basically the injector seals leak and fill up the chamber they sit in with carbon which if left can be a nightmare to get rid and worse case is the head will have to be removed to sort it out,i am sure i have read somewhere about people using cillit bang type stuff to shift the carbon, but do the black death search i am sure there will be loads of info available.

Cheers buddy appreciate it.

Make sure when you remove the injector that you re-cut the seat for the copper washer or it will just happen again, and get a new stretch bolt a copper seal from merc it is only a couple of quid
