Drivers side seat base does'nt heat up, and have been quoted £290 from the stealers  for the entire AMG seat cover as the element is integral part of the seat! Surely this can't be the case, does anyone know if I can get to the element without damaging the seat and maybe get it repaired.

You might be able to get a heated pad for a 124 that might fit. Just remove the original cover, somehow remove the excisting pad and replace. I am only guessing though.

the heater element is part of the leather itself. Not available separately since heater pads placed under the leather/foam will not be very effective. Even my 1992 400e has integrated leather cushions with elements.

bum warmers

I've looked into this as a retrofit for E class , there are some aftermarket solutions but they are mostly in US of A and range from $99 to $199.
If anyone knows of reasonble (cost wise) way of shipping from states it might be worthwhile.

google is your friend ;)

Might be worth checking it's not the switch before parting that much money? Not sure how you'd go about it though.

PS How did you find out in August??!!

I would of of thought if the relay was faulty none of the other seats/pads would work, but I will check anyway. I read from another forum that to check the continuity of the elements using a multimeter, this will tell me if it's really the element itself. Thanks for all your advice.

There are 2 pads per seat and they are mostly available separately, the ones from the 168 a-class are the cheapest and are probably compatible.

A1688200398 : HEATING PAD : EUR 45.29
A1688200498 : HEATING PAD : EUR 58.17

Here are some aftermarkets stuff, that could do thing...;)

Got me thinking, if I bought one of these pads, slot them under my existing seat cover and change the electrical connector around would this work? Yes it's a bodge but better than paying £290 for a new leather seat cover which would fail again in the future (yes it's a very common fault on my particular model).

All depends on the current intensity that needs those A-168 pads.
If they need 45w or less...etc..

But since they're MB parts, they should be compatible, as Shude already wrote.

I should add that if you have leather with heated seats from the factory then the heated seat pads (elements) are integrated into the leather. If a pad fails then the simple approach is to replace the leather item, to just fix the pad it would need to be removed from the leather and this job isn't easy. It *might* be cheaper to buy a replacement leather part and separate heated seat pad. I think the loose pads are for vehicles with cloth + heated seats, leather is more difficult because it is a thicker product and requires an integrated element in order to heat up properly.

In short:

If you have no heated seats at all (not fitted) then the pads can be fitted to any car, but will be slightly less effective if you have leather rather than cloth.

If you have broken heated seats and want to remove/replace the pads then you may have a lot of difficulty if you also have a leather interior.
