I need some help please. Would anyone be able to identify this particular model?

Many thanks.

This looks interesting, as it appears to be a chopped 2 door Ponton conversion, but I have never seen a Ponton Coupé that looks like the saloon before. The more familiar coupés and cabriolets are sleeker looking with a more curved windscreen (below). I can't remember if they were Pinin Farina styled, but the OP car wouldn't have left the factory that way (nor would the one below, for that matter!).

Those indicators don't look right on the o/p post.

It was a 1959-61 190B

= Chopped saloon the windscreen surround and the very dodgy roof gives it away among other things.

But two doors though? I thought all the saloons were four door, so a fair bit more chopping I'd say.

My guess -the guy has sawn the lower rear door in half and used the outer skins [ with the "cracks" filled in] as the basis of the reconstituted 2 door model. Less complicated if the door was shorter and you could use it in its entirety but it seems to be longer- difficult to tell from the picture ?? He might have used Original coupe door / skins as the basis of his conversion ??? Whatever --lets hope he did it on the cheap because spending a lot of money on such a conversion would frankly be insane.

I reckon it is real. Body looks like a Borgward of the same period so it is coachbuilt. And done by a German firm.

If its coach-built they seriously need to get another profession. They haven't even disguised the old indicator mounting holes in the wing- maybe its a work in progress? :dk:

Many thanks for all the input. This car has been in the family (overseas) since 1973. As relatives have passed, so has the history! I spent hours searching the web in an effort to try and identify the exact model before posting on the forum.

As mentioned in the posts below, it appears to be based upon the Ponton 190 4 door saloon, albeit this is a 2 door cabrio. I have not physically seen the vehicle so cannot state with any certainty if it has been "chopped" or modified in any way. The roof line, front lights, windscreen do not look factory and may support the chop theory. Equally, it may well be an original custom build.

Is there anyway to establish if this was coach built and would the chassis number be useful in identifying its history?

It is a bodged up coupe which has used a 180/190 saloon as a starting point .

There were a number of aftermarket cabriolet conversions which used coupes as a starting point but this is not one of them either .

The kindest thing I could say is that it appears to be a somewhat modified W120 or W121 - hard to say which because it has been modified .

You might find this site useful. It details the
Fahrgestelle = unfinished body, i.e. sent to independent, specialized coach builders (Binz, Miesen, Pollmann, etc.)

Mercedes-Benz Ponton Overview and Production Data © www.mbzponton.org

I know BINZ make limos
BINZ: Limousines & G model

Miesen seem to specialise in public service vehicles

Englisch

while Pollmann seem to specialise in hearses

Pollmann Service-Center für Karosserie & Spezialaufbauten GmbH - ABOUT US

so not much of a clue there.

Almost certainly a one-off if its a coachbuilt conversion possible based on some form of bare chassis version.
Post up the chassis details but EPC doesn't go back that far.
If you contact the MB Classic centre in Germany they have micro fiche copies of the original production paperwork. They do require documented proof of ownership in order to supply this data though.:(

Some data on variants here.
