On my W202C280 sport beside the automatic gear stick there is a switch with a W and a S on it. What is this switch for?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers.

W = Winter mode
S = Summer mode

You select W in snowy icy conditions. The gearbox will select second gear when you attempt to pull away in this mode meaning you should get less wheel spin.

S mode if for all other conditions.

Its debatable but S in your handbook will say 'Standard' and W is 'Winter'.

Standard just means it will be more jumpy and hold onto gears longer than it usually does. winter will hold onto high gears so that the car will be very cruise=like.

It's worth noting that in 'S' mode, the car will pull away in 1st gear, whilst in 'W', it'll use 2nd gear unless you initiate a full-throttle kickdown.

There's also 2 reverse speeds on this box, I believe 'W' uses a different ratio to help with slippery conditions (eg snow, ice etc).

I doubt there's much difference to fuel consumption in either mode (hence MB have gone away from 'S/E' settings) so I'd leave it in standard mode unless you prefer otherwise.

Will
