Help please?

Bruce look to move on as the car will never feel right to you now. And do you want a car that has been crashed and a insurance right off? (subject to that happening) Open up you mind their are cars out their for you and the wife to enjoy again.

Did no one the registration of the idiot that caused it originally? Obviously won't change the outcome of your beloved car but a bit of justice would help take the sting out of it maybe.

I wouldn't put my family (or me) back in that car, sorry....
It's not the panels, but as Olly says, chassis and more likely suspension will have taken a hit.

Let the Mrs try out a mini. If she's used to longer car (and MB at that) ride quality, you won't have to say a word. Great go karts but that is what they are (and I too have heard the words unreliable said about them)

How about a c class coupe with a panoramic roof or even a CLK convertible as you have other cars that will take all the family 'stuff'. Verts will become cheaper now it's out of season... (or a Saab convertible?)

Guys

If we take the write off as cash. Can I negotiate on the newly refurbished genuine AMG rims? These were stock for this car.

It is sadly looking more likely that a Write off will be the outcome. I do not have the desire for a buy back and repair + we do need a car. So it has to be a good repair now or a cash settlement.

So sorry to hear this, glad you are all Ok, much as I love my cars, my family means more to me than any car.
Hope you can buy back and repair, at least you know the history.

Just to try to make you feel a little less down, a friend of mine had his Audi A4 written off a couple of weeks ago and he was offered £1000 more than he paid for the car. But he still has the hassle of looking for a replacement (and the embarrassment of a Ford Focus hire car until he finds one).

Can't offer any advice, but just to day I am sorry for your bad luck and glad to hear no one was seriously injured.

I reckon the 'buy back' price will half of what you'd get for the wheels.

Continuing the positive theme...at least it wasn't your 124.

If the insurance company writes it off see what the estimates are and then see what the insurance company will the sell the car to you as salvage.

You never know.

That is a scary amount of damage. I think an experience like that would have sent me to a darkened room for days, shivering under the covers.

Like others, I understand how you feel about your car, how it has "become part of the family", so to speak. It's a big concern to me that my two cars are both potential write offs if there's an accident.

Again, like others, I sincerely hope your run of ill-luck is at an end.

Sorry to hear this but as everyone has said at least your family are OK. My wife has a Cooper S (2005) so one of the last ones to have the supercharged engine. It's cost her a lot in maintenance for the 3 years and 8k miles she's had it (now on 63k miles). Stuff like brake calipers, wishbone bushes etc. Despite the 24mpg (she only does very short journeys) she loves it and it has character. I do like the odd blast in it down the dual carriageway as someone will always want to take it on at the traffic lights but I wouldn't want one full time. Prefer my comforts!

It's a shame that some form of GAP insurance isn't available for used cars - to make up the difference between an "agreed value" and a write-off payout.

Or is there such a product available?

Well Bruce it is up to you but the damage is not that great,if the inner wing is damaged it will pull out ,then second hand parts maybe a new wing, would think there is not much needed for the steering suspension, you paid a lot for that new engine last year, you do have some money wrapped up in that old beast, people view damaged vehicles different well repaired they are great, others dislike them,if you have a pot of money to buy another car then fine the insurance pay out will help a little,as always it comes down to you need a car and that repair will take at least 2 weeks to complete, it is a shame the beast was worth far more to you than the book price.

Bruce Hi

Really sorry to hear of your latest news but pleased to hear that all involved are safe and well despite the bruising.

A word of caution regarding the seatbelt "injuries" based upon previous experience from a crash I was involved in. Keep a record of any aches, pains, bruising, etc, etc going forward. Hopefully won't be an issue but I ended up having key hole surgery on my shoulder following the impact.

Best wishes

Mike

Latest: The indications from the insurance assessor is that the car will be full write off!

I do not have the time or energy to devote to buying it back and repairing it. What a shame. A genuinely well maintained and looked after car with a full leather interior, we loved it.

So now I need to start the hunt for a replacement.

Must be petrol and auto with 4 doors. Looking about £3k. I would prefer an estate and would like to get another E30 Touring - but they seem to be getting very good money just now.

Anything out there?

The bodyshop can put in for contract repair, that way they can use second hand parts to keep the cost down and you'll get your car repaired.

Failing that , what about buying another S203 , and if you can agree salvage with your insurer for a reasonable amount , swap over the good bits from yours like leather interior , alloy wheels and what have you - that way you can be a bit more flexible and don't need to buy one with such a high spec ?

After a lengthy W124 restoration....who wouldn't take a rest and NOT buy a 'classic' 203 to re-invigorate?:D.

Me. I'd probably do that...

In an "at fault"claim (which this is) the insurance will only pay up to 60% of the book value of the car for "contract repairs". So sadly, this will not help in this instance. In a "non-fault" claim the insurance "may"pay up to £1.00 less than the book value of the car (assuming that they have a third party to recover their costs against).

So the car is a Write Off. A new bonnet, wing, bumper, headlight, suspension strut and arms, slam panel, inner wing etc will come to roughly £3000 - VAT including painting and fitting. Or more than 70% of the value of the car.

My other option (as mentioned earlier) is to buy the car back from the insurance at a small cash value and repair it myself. That is just not feasible:

1) I need a car.
2) I do not have the time, space or expertise to do this.

With hindsight!! An agreed insurance value is a real winner in situations like this.

Nobody is hurt and life goes on. Today in the exact same spot at the exact same time. We drove past the exact same accident and witnessed the same Highways team stood next to another unfortunate mother daughter and wrecked car. Low sun on a bend at the crest of a hill in relatively fast moving traffic approaching a major exit slip that normally queues back onto the live lane. BOOM.

Still looking for a 4 door petrol, auto. I really fancy an E30 BMW tourer, but this is limited as good examples are strong money and autos are very rare. Would consider another W203 wagon.

I wasn't really suggesting a full on restoration project ; there are still plenty of decent enough condition S203's about .

My thinking was simply that if Bruce can get a settlement for his car , and negotiate salvage of his existing car for somewhere in the low hundreds , he can look around for a decent S203 , but not necessarily one with leather etc .

Swapping over seats , wheels and a few minor bits here and there wouldn't take long , then he could dispose of his old car and still get something for it .

I wouldn't expect Bruce to buy something needing work ; he needs it to use straight away , but the odd simple upgrade to a lesser specced replacement car might not be out of the question .

Then again , maybe a petrol , automatic S204 might be within reach ?
