Car
E220d premium estate
I was in a hotel car park and stupidly took a right turn too early and mounted a kerb made of cobble lock. I heard a loud crunching sound and stopped. Got out and looked underneath and my e220 estate was wedged on the kerb underneath. Eventually I managed to drive over the kerb but a piece of flat black plastic came away from under the car. What have I done ? Car is driving ok. Dreading visit to mechanic. Sorry didnt know where to post this.

Well it would seem you have damaged the black plastic cover that covers the underneath of MB cars, get it looked at,you can buy the damaged one from MB and any mechanic will be able to fit it,you drove home so the car must still be running ok,did the car sound ok,by that did the exhaust sound ok,if so not a lot of harm done,if you want to go mountain climbing get a 4x4 they have better ground clearance.

Margaret, don’t worry the damage may not be as bad as you think. @zipdip is right, if you were able to drive home without any noticeable effects then the damage may be limited to the black plastic panel.

The black plastic panels beneath the car are designed to protect the underside of the car, and iso are designed to be sacrificial and replaceable - they’ll take the impact rather than the parts they protect.

As @zipdip suggests a mechanic should take a look beneath the car to make sure that nothing else has been damaged, and advise on what must be repaired or replaced, it might just be the black plastic.

If you’re not sure whether the car is safe to drive then you could call Mercedes-Benz Assistance, to check the vehicle where it’s parked now - they could also check to see if anything is damaged.

Link to more information on Mercedes-Benz Assist:

The other advantage is that there the Assist engineer won’t repair the damage and so has no incentive to exaggerate the damage, so you may feel that it’s a more honest initial assessment of the damage.

I hope it’s sorted quickly and easily so you can get on with enjoying your new car.

Thanks for the advice. I am feeling very stupid. Would anyone know the part number ? I use an independent mechanic so meeting him later to have a good look underneath.

There will be several black plastic panels beneath the car so it will be difficult without knowing which has been damaged.

If your mechanic get beneath the car to work out what’s damaged then your main dealer should be able to identify if from the exploded diagrams they have.

Second hand items might be an option but your mechanic would need to get the part number from the damaged parts - your dealer is unlikely to give you the part numbers.

He had a look today and its damage to the front panel only in a small area on the left side near the left front wheel. He said he would order it but I dont think he got a part number from it. No other damage done thankfully. When I had a look underneath it struck me how low the undersurface is to the road even though it's not an AMG. I will be more careful.

At least you are ok and the black plastic bit has done its job ,no real issues
( I bet you won't do that again)🤣🤣

Sorry to hear of this...A quick ebay search for engine tray W212 returned a few items. Part number A2125201323 looks about right, ( maybe since superseded), Sourceable under £50. If using ebay ideally get mechanic to check listing, pics, evidence of damage, returns policy, seller feedback etc & buy from UK seller to reduce delays or drama.

You could try specific MB salvage specialists. Dronsfields would probably be my 1st port of call...(they may be able to confirm correct part number also).

Make sure your mechanic is ok to fit a salvage part. Some will refuse. Maybe ask mechanic if steering alignment should be checked..

Good Luck :)

EDIT.......Just seen last comment by you ..if new part ordered maybe just go with that if funds allow.

It may not feel like it, but if your mechanic can’t see any further damage then that’s good news.

As I mentioned in a previous post the plastic under trays are designed to be sacrificial (to protect what’s behind them) and to improve aerodynamics (to reduce fuel consumption). The tray did it’s job.

If your mechanic is ordering from a main dealer then as long as they described it clearly there should be no need for a part number. You only really need the part number if buying secondhand.

Hopefully it will all be sorted quickly now.

Well it seems you have got away lightly,as I said in a earlier post if you want to mount curbs best get a 4x4,there is one other point I know we all want to know and that is what were you doing exiting a hotel car park at gone 1am Margaret
