Hello my fellow merc owners, hope you are all in good health

I recently had my 03' E270CDi in for an inspection at Mercedes. They told me it had a turbo oil leak and would cost £2000 to replace. Something about having to take the whole turbo unit out and open it and replace some seals (not the eck eck sea creatures). Anyway I your having a giraffe.

I am gonna take it to MercsOnly in West London. The person I spoked to said they cannot open the turbo unit up and it would need a complete replacment. Personally I always seemed to get people trying it, from the time Mercedes damaged my paintwork to lying about both ball joints needing replacing. Therefore, I weary of beleiving anything these technicians say.

Has anyone experienced a turbo oil leak and how long it is before it can become critical. And any other advise.

cheers people

thanks for you help

Mercs Only. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

turbo info

hiya, I've had a few turbo cars, here's some info for you,

1, Find out how the oil leak is manifesting itself...

a, White smoke on 'boost', blown internal seals.... turbo change!

b, oil all over the place in the engine bay, external oil leak, find the turbo, no idea where it is on a merc, follow the exhaust back to the engine, you'll find it, well hidden these days :)

i, look for the oil feed/return pipes at the turbo, check for leaks, replace seals, in situ' , check the other ends of the pipes to and check to make sure the pipes are free of crud.
ii, oil leak between the two halves (cast iron outlet, aluminium inlet), turbo change!

2, it is possible to change the seals yourself if you can get them and if you can get it apart, trouble is the impeller shaft needs to be balanced, up to 100,000rpm, expert job.

3, turbo change is easy once you've got to it, generally 4 studs holding it to the manifold and a jubilee clip on the other end... seized nuts/bolts cause the problems :)

4, do it all yourself, save £100's, go for recon turbo, or scrappy one at a push. :D

hope that helps, Kris.

It is difficult to judge this fault. If the turbo is indeed leaking oil then there should have been evidence of this as blue smoke. It's quite possible the oil is from the engine breather but without seeing it I wouldn't be able to say.

Turbocharger seals can go and can be replaced but it is normally a job for a specialist.
I would have thought fitting a new turbo would be cheaper than the £2000 you have been quoted.

These people might be worth a punt. They are proper engine tuners.

Or the old hands Turbo Technics.

You can see that the seal and bearing kit can be had for as little as £70 so at £2000 that's a lot of labour.

Turbo oil leak

According to Mercedes they said it is an expensive job as they have to take the whole turbo unit out and open it up to fix the problem and it take 24hrs labour time !!!!!!!

apparently the part cost £40 but 23 hrs labour time at Mercedes ......well you can work out the rest. I really cheesed off. Im just worried if cos of this oil leak the engine could be getting damaged

Turbotehnics would do the job for less I'm sure and they have the right kit to repair the turbo if necessary.
I bet he dealer is either sending it away or fitting an exchange unit.

An oil leak can damage an engine if the oil is leaking into the intake. The engine could run on the engine oil and will over rev uncontrollably.

Hm. That seems rather a lot as you can get a remanufactured Garrett unit on an exchange basis (from an authorised Garrett outlet with a 12 month warranty) for what looks like in your case (but check very carefully!!) for about £370 delivered. Or indeed a new one for £800.

So you might care to ask them how much labour time it takes to swap it out for a remanufactured unit rather than prat about themselves.
