I have a 1991 W124 230TE and have noticed that oscassionally when near to or on full steering lock the car feels as if it has gone over a pothole or bump in the road even though none is evident. This came to a head recently when driving though a multi-storey car park and having the car on near to full steering lock almost constantly (as I travelled to each level) the car had a noticable 'jolt' at each ramp.

The nearest I can describe this 'jolt' is that the car felt as though the front tyres were slipping sideways over the wheel rims! I tried the car at full lock in a level car park and had the same effect. I suspect the cause is worn anti-roll bar mounting rubbers at the front but wonder if any boby else has experienced similar problems.

I also suspect that the steering box may need adjusting.

I take it no one has any ideas then?

check your anti roll bar bushes - the outer ones are on "hangers" which are prone to failure.

If it is them they cost about £15 each from the dealers and take half an hour to change

Adjusting the steering box should be the last resort

It might sound silly but check your wheel bearings too. Do you get the "jolt" when brakeing?. If so forget the bearings and go with andy_k (always a source of VERY good and usefull info)

Have changed Anti roll bar Mountings - Siill doesn't feel quite right. Any other Ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Passed MOT about a month ago with flying colours so wheel bearings, loose wheel nuts (checked) etc. discounted. Jolt is on full lock when driving. :o

does it do it on all surfaces or just car parks?

due to the tight lock on these cars they can slip on car park floors if you are moving - even at walking pace

silly question - have you checked the tyre pressures?

Andy
