My 2001 CL55 instrument cluster has died :( I have spoken to merc who want £3K for a replacement. So does anybody know where I can get it repaired? or I have found a 2000 CL500 one but am not sure if it will fit.
Can somebody please help as I can't afford £3K

Thanks Danny

Thanks for that mate, just had a look on ebay and have found somebody in Yorkshire (1 hour away) and they say they fix 95% of clusters and charge £175 so fingers crossed they can help me.

I did a quick search on Google and came up with a number of companies who repair instrument clusters...apparently lack of illumination and poor display pixels are common....you could try contacting some of those...also some advertise on eBay...

Mercedes S / E Class Dash/Dashboard Instrument Cluster Failure
VDO pixel and instrument cluster repairs for BMW & Mercedes
Cluster Repairs UK - Instrument cluster speedometer repair, correction, modification and spares.

In the US this was seen a safety issue and instrument clusters were replaced on a recall, free of course. But this is only fair when they don't pay for their cars anything close to what we pay and their salaries are much higher too..., or is it only me?

It is usually the transformer that is used to pump the voltage high enough for those cold cathode fluorescent bulbs.

Thanks for that Diesel, there is somebody in the states selling one, do you know how I can find the part number of my Vin number? as I may order one.

Thanks Danny

I had the same problem with mine...MB replaced it.
I'm not sure whether it was be under good will, recall or the tier 2 warranty I have.
(not much help to you...sorry!)
Good luck, Colin.

There was a recall on these clusters. Had mine replaced free as well.

Similar to this?? Transformer 8 903 428 016 for Mercedes S Class W220 instrument cluster illumination repair
Its possibly going to be either

Bosch 8-903-428-016
or
Bosch 8 948 411 098

you check by looking at the number if you pull the dash. Note they recommend replacing a couple of transitors also

Well hats of to 'revtronic' they have fixed it and I now have light!!!

Cost was £175 including 12month guarantee. So not bad compared to £3K!

I can vouch for cluster repairs... they are very good.

Thanks Jay - am considering using them to repair my SatNav player - good to get a recommendation - now just need to figure out how to get Comand out!

Cheers

Hope this helps someone fuse/relays for instrument cluster are behind drivers seat underneath passenger seat I pulled them all and the cluster came back to life, so worth checking fuses before getting Mercedes or anyone to fix saved me a fortune by all accounts.

Chances are that one of the three transformers for the cluster has blown which blew the fuse, you replacing the fuse will be putting the other two under more stress and I guarantee it will stop working soon. Another solution to a repair is to get a replacement from eBay (the speedo fascia can be swapped for your original one if needed) and then get the cluster coded to the car. I just did exactly this!
