As per the title I'm looking for some laptop memory: SODIMM DDR3 1333MHz CL6 4GB

I currently have 2x2GB but would like 2x4GB, if the price looks appealing.

Wiki leads me to believe that the fastest latency speed I can have in that format is CL6. I suspect I currently have CL9 memory.

I've tried a few website (Dabs, Crucial, LambdaTek) but can so far only find CL9 memory. Does anyone know where I can find CL6, if it's available at all?

Many thanks.

Checked your laptop chipset supports 8GB ram? What do you use that laptop for that require so much memory?

CL6 latency may be available for DDR3 desktop memory but it doesnt mean it is for laptop memory (yet). As you cant find any from any of the main vendors it most likely isnt and TBH you world hardly notice the difference.

Yep. From the manual:

Memory
Connectors :two internally-accessible SODIMM sockets
Capacities: 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB modules
Memory types: 1067 MHz and 1333 MHz DDR3
Memory configurations possible: 2 GB, 3 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB

Though the manual also suggests I have Bluetooth, but I've failed to get that to work. But I feel I'm on steadier ground with the memory.

Ignore the manual for the moment, what does crucial say when you go by machine type?

Also, what OS are you running?

Your laptop uses DDR2 memory and not DDR3 according to Crucial.

I tried to use the Crucial 'scan my system' tool and it failed to recognise my system. But I was able to manually enter: Alienware - M15x. Crucial then says: Each memory slot can hold DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 PC3-10600 with a maximum of 4GB per slot.*

But I also ran SiSoftware Sandra and scanned my PC which comes up with: 2 x Hynix SO-DIMM DDR3 2GB/64 @1.33GHz

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I'm running mathematical simulation software that depending on the analysis uses 2-4GB. I also run larger models on the company cluster, but would like flexibility to run more models locally.

Either run cpu-z to check the current memory specs or remove the memory module cover and see what is on the label on the current module.

Edit: Just seen the above you you know for sure you have DDR3.

CPU-Z says:

DDR3
4096 MBytes
661 MHz (dynamically changing)
CL=9

I've no really problem buying CL9 memory, but just thought if CL6 was available for a modest premium I'd be happy to buy it. :)

ya, there's two M15X Alienwares Doh!

From Experience Crucial doesnt get it wrong.

4GB DIMMS are big money @ £95 but last year they were £300 each so count your blessings.

EDIT - I notice if you scroll down they are doing 10600 CL9 DIMMS but at £190 for 8GB.

You're right Spike £95 for 4GB is a lot, so spending £190 for 8GB is not easy to justify.

I wonder how long I'd have to wait for the price to 1/2 again? 6 months?

I've found what I think is some good value RAM:

£65 4GB

Warranty: Lifetime
Size: 4GB
Type: PC3-10600 DDR3-1333 SODIMM
Manufacturer: FunkyRAM
Condition: New
Part Number: ATA4GB1333SO
Feature: Non-ECC, Unbuffered
FSB/Speed: 1333MHz
Pins: 204
Cas Latency: 7
Density: Low

Is there anything that looks wrong about the spec to suggest why it's so cheap?

I'm just not sure I'd be happy with ordering from that company - who and where are they? China or somewhere?

A work colleague recommended them to me. For what it's worth he's bought from them a few times. I just need to be sure it's for 1*4GB rather than 2*2GB.

From the Wiki link I wasn't aware CL7 was available. But I see it is available on the slower 533MHz RAM. Was life simpler once? :)

EDIT: they have an Ebay page too. Says they ship from UK and have 97% feedback.

Have used funky giraffe on ebay before with no problems.

Prices have tumbled since I started this thread. Today I've bought 8GB (2x4GB) for £90 (inc VAT and delivery).

The memory arrived today, all installed and working OK. The benchmarks show it to be roughly the same speed as the previous memory.

So time to crack on and do some work with it.

Oh dear. The blue screen of death has appeared. Using the Dell diagnostic (BIOS ?) scan shows the fault code: 2000-0123. The same error appears when one or both or the memory chips are in. They'll be going back in the post tomorrow. PITA!

Where did you buy it from?
