Can the speed shift buttons on the back of an AMG steering wheel be removed and put onto a non AMG wheel ?

Reason I'm asking is that my CL55 has a plain tan steering wheel with the buttons and I want a wood/leather steering wheel.

To my mind, the buttons are simply sending an electronic signal via the wiring to the gearbox, so surely the steering wheel that they're on is a little irrelevant if the wiring is maintained ?

The centre of the steering wheel with the menu/volume/phone controls etc would remain in place, it would just be the rim and base that would be replaced.

I know there would be some cutting/fettling etc. but has anyone done this or can think of a reason for it not to work ?

Cheers

Jonny

Nb - there isn't a wood/leather wheel for the CL55 with AMG buttons, I've enquired !

They might be able to answer your question. Click on Mercedes they do wheels for the 215, i don't know if they do one with buttons. They have a Tiptronic on with the + & - on the front, i think they may be very exspensive.

Hi Peter - sent them an email. they also do some interesting looking buttons for the airbag bit for phone, menu etc. Will let you know the price !

Had a text off the chap who picked up my old CL500 yesterday and drove it back to London - "It's awesome, I love it !"

Which is nice :-)

Cheers

Well done with the sale. If it ran as good as it looked he should be pleased, one of the best one's i have seen.

Where you pleased with the amount you got for it ?(£16,809.00)

Hi Pete - picked up the Cl55 this morning. Absolutely love it ! the G/F is raving about the interior, whic is pretty much as new now and all issues like torque convertor and boot lid had been sorted by Steve. It's a brutal, amazing, serene piece of kit and so nice to drive :bannana:

Whilst I thought mine went for an "ok" price in the current market place, the 55 was the car I always wanted and I've saved more by having the 500 as a stop gap and getting the 55 at a good price than buying the 55 last year. I think the 55 will hold its price more than the 500 going forward, as it's a specialist car.

Had an email back from a chap in the states re the wooden steering wheel and a standard CL500 wood/leather wheel can be fitted in place of the current one, which just means you lose the "manual" shift on the AMG wheel. Not a problem for me, as I think I will use it v rarely, but will see what the chaps you put me on to come back with, price wise.

You'll hate me for saying it. but it's worth every single penny and much more !

Piccys to follow in due course :D

Cheers

Jonny

Just sent you a PM, missed this post. Glad it all worked for you and it's come up to your exspectations, and if you look after the 55 as well as your 500 it will get even better.

The price you paid for it was the correct price.

Having prised off the tiptronic buttons on the back of my dull brown AMG wheel, I can confirm that they are simply two buttons attached by two wires ! I have a wood and leather AMG wheel on order (non tiptronic) and will investigate the practicalities of either just buying two brand new buttons from Merc or transplanting the old ones from my AMG wheel.

Either way, it will transform the interior.

Also got some Gliptone leather cleaner and feed on the driver's seat squab. It really is as clean as new with just a few faint traces of creasing. I really do love the Java interior now, just that steering wheel to change :-)

I would ask Alfie or Richard about the practicalities on the fitting of the Buttons.

Did you order the wheel from MB ?

Calling Alfie or Richard !!

Am I barking up a catless tree with my proposed mod ? It seems as though it's just a case of cutting out the plastic/foam and inserting the buttons with the original wires being maintained through the centre column ? That said I don't have the new wheel order confirmed yet. An AMG style wheel from MP Design with tiptronic buttons is around £685 + VAT  and I can get an AMG style wheel without Tiptronic buttons for £350. Seems a lot of money if it is a simple transplant jobby ?

Cheers in advance !

Jonny
