Thought I'd say hello after lurking for a while.

Bought my first Merc last month and liking it so far! Its a 2004 E55 estate which looks (to my eyes) to be quite well equipped. The only obvious thing it doesn't have is keyless entry/go but not bothered by that anyway.

Couple of irritations that someone may be able to help with though -

Had new pads and disks fitted and they still squeal after 1,500 miles. Was told to be gentle with them, so I was and they squealed badly. Then told to hammer them, so I did and it has helped but still squeal if I'm light on them for a while. Are all new disks like this, I know they're big units but its annoying!

Secondly, occasionally the gearbox hunts on first selection if I take off swiftly in manual (doesn't engage quick enough, then changes its mind for another gear by the feel of it). I'm guessing this could be from the gearbox not learning me yet, or me engaging and expecting it to be ready like a manual would be? Hopefully nothing more serious as its not all the time

Sorry, 2 questions on my first post!

Are you sure the squeal is from the discs that were changed, the rear ones tend to be noises than the fronts or at least they are on a few I have driven.

As for the gear changes can you give more information, does it happen in all gears or one in particular and at what rev range. Finally how far are you pushing the accelerator is it light, partial or full throttle when you experience it.

By the way nice choice in car I have one two :-)

Thanks all,

Savman, it only seems to happen in first gear when accelerating hard in manual. f I crawl off it is fine, but if I give it some beans its like it selects a gear, decides it isn't good enough, selects another gear then launches. If it was in full auto i'd understand it, but this is in manual?

Doesn't happen all the time, but maybe its not expecting me to do it?

Edit - I'm probably being a bit indecisive with the throttle too, I'm used to having to be progressive with the throttle due to mid engine rwd 300bhp/ton with no driver aids....

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome aboard.

Any indecision from the throttle gives the 'box a nightmare as it is adaptive.

I've upset mine a few times accelerating hard to a point and then suddenly easing off. It doesn't know what to do with itself, lol.

With regard to squeal - I had this after a while when I first got it. I'd negotiated new discs and pads up front - it gradually went away after a few weeks and I think it was Summer time also.

However, since having a replacement set of pads up front, they've never squeaked.
