hi guys need some newbie advice on hardtop

hi there have just joined the forum and im on my second r129 sl.this time around i have the facelift sl280.it has a pano roof at the minute but im looking to get a standard one.
are they all the same?i have seen a few on ebay but5 cant make out if the pins are in the same place?any help would be much appreciated

Why would you want a standard one over the Pano?

As fopr the question, the non pano roof will fit but I believe there was some discussion that the rubber seals on the early examples differ from the facelift.

I prefer the standard hard top myself. It's lighter, and I think the more 'angular' look suits the car better.

But I fully appreciate that generally the pano. top is more sought after.

Mabz,

Your SL's windows will drop by half an inch when the doors open, and vice versa, as you know. Earlier SLs didn't do this, so the hardtops had different seals, which allowed the glass to butt up against them. The later seals are channelled for a better seal, and the windows raise and lower in and out of the channel with the opening/closing of the doors, so any replacement roof for yours will want this channelling.

I'm pretty sure there was a 'fitting process' for the pano top in WIS that involved adjusting something to do with the locking mechanism. It was posted on here years ago. If so, not sure whether you'd (theoretically) have to reverse this if going back to a standard roof. But I'm pretty sure most people who change to a pano top now would just bung it on rather than alter anything (window seals excepted).
