hi there im considering buying a new HID kit for my CLK W209 270cdi.

I was wondering whether these kits will give a bulb out error, as they run at 35w, as opposed to the standard halogen bulb running at 55w. If so is there any canceller cables that i need to buy, or is there any specific kits i should get to avoid these errors?

Also i was wondering if anyone has any experience with slim hid kits, do they have the same light output as the normal kits?

Thanks in advance

Kam

Forget fitting a HID kit into non-projector headlights.

They'll look rubbish in a standard headlight - buy better bulbs (way cheaper)

Not too mention will be quite illegal unless you fit a bumf-load of other bits, like self-levelling, wipers and some other bits and bobs...

From the horses mouth:
http://www.dft.gov.uk/pgr/roadsafety/drs/hidheadlamps

In summary it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in accordance with the rules stated above.

This is in the UK - not sure about other countries.

Hi Spinal,

Wasn't going to go down the legal route because few seem bothered by it.

But shed loads of scattered white light from a stock headlight can be generated for about £20 and not £80-100 without any hassle.

As others will add, properly functioning headlights using HID technology need projector head light shells etc.

I see, i dint know there was such a big issue on the legality side of it, however that means that i prob wont fit them lol! Unless theres a way i can buy projector lamps? or whats the best "xenon" look bulbs you can reccomend? with a good output, and a good blue-whitish light?

Lots of grief about retrofitting HID's :D

6000K will give the effect you seek, and projector headlight shells are best sought as second hand - new ones cost an arm and a leg.. no wonder insurance is so dear!

Then of course you need to make your lights self-level and have headlamp wash.... but thats another story

Instead of goin for the full HID kit, if i was just to get bulbs, as you said they will give a better effect and cost a lot less. What bulbs would u reccomend, that will have the xenon look?

If you're looking at bulbs, I found Osram's Nightbreakers to look quite good (and not cost too much)...

If you really want HIDs the cheapest (legal) option is to find a breaker who has the same model, buy the lamps/ballasts fit them yourself and then get a dealer to re-code the car.

If you aren't too keen on the law, and don't mind your insurance company using it as a get-out clause; there was a group-buy on the forum a while ago for an aftermarket kit.

Do a quick search on here for "HID illegal" there are tons of threads, one titled "are HID's illegal" (or something like that) with lots of good avice.

That is an EU regulation as well. Think all of Europe even non-EU countries use it.

yeah i think ill leave the HID kit, get pulled over enough as it is as a 21 year old lol!
What colour do these osram nightbreakers give out?
Is it still a boring yellow colour, or more of a blue-whitish colour?

Thanks guys

Will philips x-treme have that nice white-blue colour, or more of a yellowy colour?

I used to use Nightbreakers ....I didnt think that they were particularly blue.

I usually like to use a bulb that gives off the best light rather than the colour.:)

after a bit of research it seems osram night breakers / philips bluevision / philips diamondvision are the best looking with the best light output? anyone used any of these?

Slim HID kits are the same as normal ones in terms of output mate. I've got a slim HID kit on my car and its been there for almost 2 years with no problems.

Ive also decided to buy a Slim HID kit after a bit of research, only question i got left to ask is, will i get a on board error showing bulb out or anything? seeing that the HIDs run at 35w and not 55w like normal halogens?

Thanks

sorry car is a W209 CLK 270 cdi facelift
