HID Xenon convertion

I every one , I know this has been talked about before,, but I had to experiment my self about this convertion.
Just comeback from a short trip abroad and I came accross of a set of HID Xenon, so I decide to gevit a try.

First of all upon installation the CPU did not report any fault on the display without changing the coding to xenon present.

But when I'm driving I get itermittent flickering ( maybe on flick every 10 to 20 seconds randomly). Maybe this will be solved if I change the coding to present, I do not know ???
I will try this sometime tomorrow, but meanwile I have got the same kit on my workbench for testing ,and I have found out that at switch on it takes about 4.6Amps wich is aout the equivalent of a 55W bulb and within a minute from switch on it goes down to 3.6Amps.

So is this the normal process for a xenon ? :crazy:

Is it really advisable to change tha coding ? :crazy:

Do you think it is the wrong coding causing the flickering? :crazy:
 
Are they original xenon lamps? And yes they do need to be coded to the car other wise they will keep flickering as the car needs to told it has xenons fitted...this will cure the flickering problem.

If this is the case I had in mind to code them
I will do that tomorrow and I hope this will solve the flickering
 
Hi,
As the Xenons control boxes units are an inductive load, they will intially draw more current on start up then settle to a steady current draw, so yes what you are seeing is normal, though regarding the coding issue, all your cars computer wants to see is the correct load ie 55W so if you were to utilise a couple of resistors, you would negate the need for coding.

No i have never done it, but the cars computer sees only the load, that could be anything, motor, bulb, heater etc. so all you have to do is fool the computer that its still running a 55W load.
 
I'm also going to install HID's in my w211 - Can the coding be done through a normal STAR diagnoser? or is the developer mode needed? Anyone know which menu this option will come under?

Normal STAR is all that's needed, you just need it to be get it set to state XENON=PRESENT

Is that going to be possible for you to do easily in Pakistan?
 
Yes - loads of HID kits available here - I found some made by Bosch as well. An indy here is a friend and was thinking I will go to him and get the coding done. As always, he will hook it up and tell me to do it myself. Hence the need to know which menu/control unit to look under.

I'm pretty sure the stealership will not do it for me. :)

Sorry to be a pedant but surely a higher start current then dropping is indicative of a capacitive load rather than inductive?

Remembering my A level physics an inductance produces an EMF which opposes the change of current hence the current would rise sowly to its normal level. However, with a capacitive load there is a higher start current as you need to charge the capacitors; the current then slowly drops as there is no longer any need to put energy into the capacitors.

Or am I totally wrong???

Hercules, can you let me know how good the results are and if there is any real glare etc from them now?? I am going to fit a kit on my W203 but wanted to know your thoughts on it.....cheers...
 
I'm very please with the glare, I used 6000K bulbs in wich I belive it is a pure white beam.
I did not go for a high Temperature that gives sligtly to the blue

Yes i was going to go for 6000k as its the optimum light output, i was just wondering about the possible glare etc. You got any pics of it?? :thumb:
 
I beleive that most OEM Xenons are 4500-5000k ...

6000k is a bit blue , i went for 6000k 's in mine and wish i hadn't , when one fails i'll replace them with 5000k 's
 
Looks like a lot of glare coming from those lights.
 
I have upgraded to HID - non OEM conversion that I had used previously in my w163 - now gone into a w203 2001. Warning icons only come on occasionally, there is no obvious flickering?

I do hope that this is not another car on the road with blinding xenons fitted to halogen reflectors that are not designed for hids at all, not to mention self-levelling and automatic headlamp cleaning systems.

One of the aforementioned overtook me on the motorway the other night and the glare was horrific. Trees on both sides of the motorway were illuminated. If you want HIDs, do it properly please.
