does anyone use a programme to hide your genuine ip address while on the net.a friend has just had a lot of bother because someone has been using his ip address on dodgy internet sites, took him 3 weeks to sort everything out.
would running a prog to hide the ip address work

There are plenty of anon proxies, but what your friend needs is to secure his network, as anyone abusing it will not be bothered with hiding the hijacked IP address.

what sort of dodgy internet sites has your friend been accused of using exactly and by whom?

5 mins work to spoof any public IP address..

Spoofing is one thing. Doing it *usefully* is another matter.

It's a bit like putting a false sender address on the back of an envelope. Relatively trivial to do but to what end?

And in principle (though not necessarily in practice) outgoing routers can easily determine the sender IP address is inconsistent with the source.

all adult sites with stolen credit card numbers.also used my mates paypal, facebook and other forum details and passwords.he is 100% above board and would be horrified if he looked at porn.

That doesn't appear to be the same as "someone has been using his ip address on dodgy internet sites".

That's using his personal details. Nothing to do with IP addresses.

There are a number of ways they could leak. Eg. Malware on one of the machines he regularly uses or open wi-fi.

Sounds as if he has been the victim of identity theft and his credit card details have been "sold on" to a third party. :wallbash: Time to re-invent himself in the digital world.:ban: New credit cards new bank even ?? new computer+ better security software new passwords new ISP email address etc:dk:

and i believed you till i saw your avatar lol

It's nothing to do with his IP address. Hiding his IP address will do nothing.

If they accessed his paypal, it means "they" have his paypal credentials - paypal does NOT use IP address as an authentication method.

Given that you mention IPs, I would hazard he somehow knows that the fraudulent transactions came from his home internet connection.

So I would hazard either someone in his household is using his account, or he has some malware on his machine. Time to run a full malware scan and change all his passwords...

could someone have hacked into his system somehow (trojan)and be using him as a proxy to go onto these sites? I'm a bit of a ludite when it comes to proxys, but think this could be what has happened here and would make sense if his ip address has been logged on other sites while making fraudulant payements through stolen CC details :dk:

That of course wouldn't explain away the use of his paypal, maybe the trojan if there is one has a key logger as well?

Possible, he has become a zombie, and has ceased to control his own PC. Unlikely, though, the malware mongers go to great lengths to ensure the victims are kept in the dark.

I'll bet there isn't up to date anti-virus or patching, and someone else is using the PC. Or he is doing dodgy websites...
