High end mercs on a budget

Following the 8k thread I've always wondered about the 5k über mercs on ebay etc. I always thought they were a non starter....a 5k car with 5k of MOT issues waiting to surface.

Has anyone successfully bought and run a 500/600/AMG without anything much more than the tyres/ins/fuel for more than a year?

I thought it was really interesting on top gear when they did the cheap super coupes but they seemed to drop the tv article when the cl600 broke.

If it cost £100,000 to buy its still a £100,000 car to repair, high end super cars on a budget don't work, trust me speaking with the voice of experience.

The only thing my cl needed iirc was a complete gearbox rebuild at two grand, new cats, new headlight glass, servicing, tyres every 5k miles 255/45/18s, new parking sensors every six months. Um. Oh and 15 to 22mpg.....

If you can get a car cheaper enough - and you get a year or 18 months out of it, you may be doing better than the depreciation on some cars which are running normally.

If you can't afford a good one, you certainly can't afford a bad one ;)
