Hi, My car's fuel consumtion is very high. Its only 5-6 Miles/Litre. Can you please someone help me with your valuable advise. Thanks

Drive a lot more slowly and smoothly.

Without any other symptoms, it quite hard to know where to start.

Thanks for your reply. Rest everything is working ok apart from some minor problems like SRS light is permanent ON, Alarm setting off randomly etc. Vehicle is running smooth but the fuel consumption is high. Any suggestion please

Have you had the vehicle a while and this only just started, or is it a new vehicle to you?

Are you working out the consumption yourself from fuel added and miles run? If so over what distance have you checked?

In what conditions do you drive your car? What's your typical journey time and distance?

Thanks for your reply. i just bought this vehicle last month. I have filled the tank 3 times with 20 litres each time and the total distance covered is around 300 miles. Please suggest.

vehicle is used lightly with commute to work i.e. 10 miles return onlocal roads.please advise. Thanks

What age is your A140 out of interest and which gearbox has it got? My mother's first A-class had a problem with the alarm going off intermittently and various warning lights coming on, and in the end a new ECU solved it. However, it is possible sometimes to accidentally press the lock button on the remote when you start the car, which activates the alarm, and after a few seconds the alarm will go off. I speak from experience here :o
I drive a facelift A140 Elegance Auto and I average between 34 and 40mpg depending on the conditions, etc. It is possible to get as little as 30 but you'd really need to be driving like a madman. Another question, is there a smell of petrol in the car at all? If so you might find that there are new jubilee clips required and there might be a leak on the fuel line which would cause various problems. Do you find the car 'hunts' when it is idling?
I would definitely get the car checked on diagnostics

what do you mean by 27/mpg ? please explain

Car manufacturers rate their cars' fuel consummation in Miles per Gallon (mpg) for the UK market. If you have a look around on the Internet you should fine the manufacturer's quoted mpg figures for your car (which is specific to the model / year of manufacture / engine type / gearbox type) - real life figures though will be slightly lower.

My guess is that at some point, most of the members of this forum, myself included, along with potential members will have encountered the issue of MPG.

I've just followed the advice of some incredibly helpful people who have the patience to repeat their knowledge without grumbling or having a go. I've brimmed my tank and today I reached around 30-37 MPG on a long run. My lesson is that in traffic, my clk 230k drinks petrol at a higher rate than it does when cruising at a constant speed on a longer journey. Might be bloody obvious to some while not so to others.

Is there any chance that someone could (I haven't yet found such a thing) post a sticky with published vs actual M.P.G's for the various models of Merc-Benz's as i've come across at least half a dozen posts over the last couple of days which basically ask and answer the same questions.

Of course, the flip side of this is that I really appreciate other people answering my questions and the members of this forum are real stars for bothering to do so. Looking at charts sometimes isn't as rewarding as actually having a question answered.

Worth a mention. Apologies if this has already been answered a gazillion times already - just trying to help.

^ I agree, Actual v pubished can be somewhat different.

Journey type, roads, traffic and your driving style can have a huge impact on MPG though.

My wifes A Class a Petrol 2.1 manual gets 35-40mpg almost all the time, and more if I don't have a go before we fill it up :)

I tend to think in my head a bigger engine is actually better sometimes as it doesn;t actually have to try as hard to get things moving...

Typical example would me by dads E320Cdi Estate currently it NEVER does less than 40mpg on any run and he has seem 60mpg. I dout any of the smaller dervs in the range do better?

Anyway back on topic, 27mpg depending upon your journey for 5miles or 10 mile round trip could be right? Cars hardly warmed up. When was its last service? check things like tyre presure, it makes a huge difference. Next thing is to try and read the road better, try not to rush up to cars / lights / junctions and hit the brakes. Look further ahead read the road, oh and as my mum always says feather lightly :)
