Hit a huge pot hole. No sign of damage to the tyres or the 19” alloys but I am getting a vibration sensation (Feel it at higher speeds, fades when I go slower). Like the wheels are out of balance.

Is this something is should worry about or is it just a case of tyre balancing my wheels again?

Thanks.

Check alloy for inner rim damage (that you cant see) and also you "may" get very slow air loss.... balancing will sort this but if its cracked its a new rim and some hair line cracks you cant see until the tyre is off the rim.... i speak of many experiences on 22" ML alloys and also when I had my Huracan....

You may have simply lost a wheel weight. Is it vibrating through the steering (usually front wheel balance) of through your bum (usually rear wheel balance).

It could also be suspension damage/alignment that would require a full geometry check. Try having a look at your wheel weights to see if you can spot where one has come off, leaving a sticky pad or a clean bit of wheel. That could save you the cost of a geometry check.

Rim may well be buckled, very difficult to spot on the car.

You certainly need to get it checked out.
It may, indeed, be just a balancing weight that you've lost
That's not so serious.
If it is tyre-side-wall damage - and today's low-profile tyres are very prone to this - then it could be potentially very serious.
Also - Aluminium wheels with low profile tyres are very vulnerable.
Pot-holes on today's roads are my nightmare !

First step is wheel (not tyre) balancing for a lost weight. If that doesn't work it's off to a specialist (not your local kwik fit) for a full alignment check.

If you're lucky and you're near someone like Micheldever tyres, who can offer that service, then see them and you could save the second journey.

Bottom line - get the fault fixed because it's your lovely motor, it will affect high speed handling and, if unresolved, it will damage your tyre through uneven wear.

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ll start by taking it to my local tyre place and get it balanced/checked out. Will get it sorted ASAP as I’m often doing long journey.

I’m hoping it is just a weight that has come off the alloy and not buckled. I’ll have a check and keep you guys updated thanks again.

I had this problem last year (vibration through the seats at higher speeds after hitting a pothole), and it was a buckled front wheel. My local garage claimed it was too small a buckle to fix, but a wheel specialist disagreed and fixed it for £60.

Its nearly always the inner rim that gets damaged or cracked over pot holes as its structurally far weaker that the outer edge. My 19 inch amgs have all cracked and been welded and two have had to be unbuckled. All on the inner rim.

I hit a huge pothole and it cracked a wheel :( £600 from MB but got one for £300 from ebay (Germany)

Also check your inner tie rod not exactly hard to bend on a bad pot hole.

So I got it checked out today and it’s a small buckle inner rim.

Like a few of you have said the inner rim is weaker.

I have to drive it 250 miles for work [emoji20] hope it doesn’t cause any damage to the tyre will get it fixed soon as I get back. Just hope it’s just the alloy that’s damaged and nothing else is.

Local Repair: quoted £70 or £60 if I took the wheel in myself. Any one had any experiences with a small buckle repair? Was told it would be as good as new.

Is it worth putting a claim in for the damage it’s caused ? I know £70 isn’t much but it may help that fill the pot hole up so it doesn’t happen to anyone else. Damn Manchester roads are awful, I’m always trying to avoid them and didn’t see this one :(

Hi, to get compo, you'll need a picture of the pothole and be sure it hasn't been marked with paint, that will show that the council are aware and about to mend it. Good luck, it's a bloody outrage !

If it has paint, Council are aware, and didn’t fix it, nor put up a warning, then they are liable. If yours is the first ever report of that pothole, then they aren’t.
There is an online site where you can check if a pothole has been reported previously.

Most buckles and even small cracks can be repaired easily and with little or no risk of future problems. All of my unbelievably fragile (for such an expesive car) 19" AMGs have had repairs.

Council are useless.........they don`t repair potholes to keep the economy going?

Had a new spring recently on my Zafira....

Yes, as mentioned I had this repair done on one of my front wheels last year. Cost was £60, I'm not sure who actually did the repair as it was via Star Motors in Reading (Star Motor Services).

They took the tyre off and fixed the wheel using some clever tool that heats the wheel up and takes the buckle out. They lent me a spare wheel in the meantime, which was very good of them. A local garage had previously told me it was not repairable, so careful who you listen to. I was also told that I wasn't doing any damage driving on the buckled wheel, but I doubt you'd want to do it for any longer than was necessary.

It completely fixed it.

I didn't bother with the hassle of trying to claim anything back from the council, I have friends who have done this (I think they're more bloody-minded than me) and it took them lots of time and effort. I just took the (fairly small) hit and forgot about it. I am much more cautious about potholes now though.
