Hit a huge pot hole...

So I got the buckle fixed. It cost me £70. Got the car back and it has been fixed but only 96% the other 4% I notice a tiny bit of vibration only around the 60mph mark. Like no other person would notice but I’ve done 50k plus miles now with the car and I can tell. Maybe it’s due to the tyre as I did travel like 320 miles on it before getting it fixed? Who knows. Or maybe when I hit the pot hole my rear alloy got a little knock.

Will get all four wheels check out at some point then go down the route of getting new alloys or even try a different alloy repair company. Just want the best or nothing [emoji4]

Balancing very possibly the issue here and will (to some degree) cater for uneven wear in a tyre? Getting the balancing right requires a tech that wants to get it right and will make sure it is right. A wobble at 60mph would indicate a very small amount weight is required to be added or subtracted. A good balance will also place the weights across the width of the wheel rim and not just stick em' all round the outer or inner rim? It may be worth visiting a recommended shop in your area, sitting them down, explaining the issue and your expectation.

I’ll get all 4 wheels checked and put on the balancing machine. Fingers crossed this will sort it. If that doesn’t work I would be happy buying a replacement alloy from eBay , ones that haven’t be welded or buckled that I’ve seen. £320- £350 each. Hopefully I would only need the one alloy.

Correct me if I’m wrong people: E class Coupé 19” twin spoke alloys fronts 235 / 35 / r19 and tears 255 / 30 / r19 are these alloys the same size all round just a different tyre size ? How would I find out the model number without taking the wheel off ?

Some part of me is saying just get new alloys all round, maybe try something new. What are people’s opinion for a nice set of alloys 19” on an e Coupé black ? Cost of alloy refurb (diamond cut would cost loads) and getting the alloys perfectly straight will cos me a loads that I might as well buy a nice brand new set. I’ve seen these like I like :

I’ve seen some for great prices. Like £600 for a set !!

I replaced the stock diamond cut wheels on my black CLS with a set of Gunmetal Fox alloys , i was quoted around £80 - £100 to refurbish the original AMG wheels and the new larger staggered 19" Fox wheels were just £550 for the set plus the 18`s needed new rubber anyway.

18`s

19`s

There are enough problems with the OEM alloy wheels to male you really worry about cheap 19's!!

Complete nightmare! How do you avoid them at night on a fast road?

These looks much better. Did you sell your old set ?

I’ll try to get mine perfect and vibration free if that isn’t successful then individual replacements. But if I need to replace more than one then it has to be a new set and sell my current ones of for pennies :(

No, i was keeping them to use on the winters salt covered roads but never got round to refitting them. I will get them coated shadow chrome over the coming months and possibly offer them for sale as i will be sticking with the 19`s until i change the car and by that time any potential buyer will not be too concerned the original wheels are not fitted.

Update: So after thinking the repair wasn’t great, I thought get all the wheels rebalanced and checked just in case. This way I can check if the repair job was good or if any of my other wheels were causing me problems.

Repaired buckled wheel was perfect, I can’t believe how much of a good job the repair guy done. So I was hoping it was one of the other wheels that was causing the problem and not a suspension error. So it turns out that the rear wheel was also buckled at the same time as the first(damn you pot hole!). I’m glad I got them all checked out now. So back to the alloy specialist to get that repaired and my ride should be back to normal.

So the idea of buying a new set of alloys or replacing one is out of the window.

£155 spent by the time this is all sorted. Still way cheaper than buying a new alloy. Mercedes quoted me £675 and £200 extra to get it fitted. Madness!!!!

Mind boggles.....

£200 to £300. I said why is it so much they said it’s just labour. I said that would only cost £10 from my local tyre garage.

He said they are many factors that go into it. Remove tyre , sort out pressure sensor, value, install new tyre , rebalance , and fit.

Madness!

Just an updated for searches: (mainly for people who come across a similar problem)

Buckled Alloy Wheel

Buckled my 19” alloy on a pot hole. I knew i damaged the alloy as it instantly had a vibration feeling through the steering wheel.

I got my wheels checked out at my local tyre garage. They put the alloy on a wheel balance machine and you could clearly see the buckle on the inside of the alloy. It only cost me £5 for them to check it.

Took it to my local alloy buckle repair garage, not many places repair them. Cost me £70 for them to repair it, duration normally takes 3 hours depending how bad the damage is.

Drove off and tested it on the motorway, it was much better but it wasn’t perfect. I did read on forums that buckled alloys are never 100% after a repair. So just assumed I needed a replacement alloy to get it 100%. I thought that maybe they didn’t balance it right. I couldn’t live with it not being perfect so got all the alloys rebalanced (might of been a rear wheel problem as I could feel some of the vibration coming from the bottom of my seat) and checked for buckles costing £10. The repaired alloy was perfect, the guy from the garage said it was rotating perfect, so it wasn’t that but one of my rear alloys. So if you ever hit a pot hole I would suggest paying a little be extra and checking all yours wheels why your at the garage.

Took it in for repair and now my car runs smooth again. Not even the slightest bit of vibration.

I do recommend buckle repairs if it’s the inside of your alloy. It will save you hundreds. Outside (alloy front face) buckle is trickier to repair but it can be done.

Thank you everyone on the forum for getting back to me and helping me out, it means a lot.

Did you consider making a claim on local authority for repair?

Pothole must be deeper than 40mm to succeed, if it has been marked prior to damage so much the better.

Ask for a copy of the inspection reports to see if Road has been inspected to comply with legislation

I hit a pothole on day 13 of ownership on my XF. It damaged the front tyre and had to be replaced.
It happened at night so being dark I couldn’t see the hole I hit. The next morning I went back and took several photographs to submit on my claim to South Ayrshire Council.
On my claim I also quoted Google Earth as it clearly showed that several unsuccessful repairs had been carried out.
The Council paid in full for the new tyre. Don’t be put off with feeble excuses.

Thats three tyres ive lost to potholes this winter, two on the CLS and one on the Rangey. Also cracked one alloy on the CLS. Its been an expensive winter!

I travelled from Norfolk to Surrey recently and the roads befit a third world country.

Even the motorways and A roads are full of potholes, considering the amount of money collected from motorists it is utterly disgusting.

Rant finished.
