HOARDING USELESS STUFF!

We have been in our present house for 22 Years, this week I started to clear out my Garage, and after emptying LOTS of Used Tins of Paint, (keep some just in case) I had accumulated just under 5 Gallons of the stuff! WHY? :wallbash::mad::eek::oops::rolleyes:
Because, as my ole dad used to say: ‘it’ll come in handy if ya never use it!’ 😁

The last proper chuck out we had was during the first lockdown. Tbh it felt really good to have a clear out and we seemed to not gather any more useless stuff since. 🥳

Just because it wasn't useful in the past 40 years, does not mean that it is useless - have some faith - its day will surely come.

44 years and counting…

Stuff (ie ‘useful tools’) from my dad, Mrs B’s dad, plus my own bought before I ‘inherited’ theirs. But tbh I’m loathe to get rid. I mean, I occasionally use both Workmate benches together, and one of these days I’ll teach myself how to weld, using my TIG welder.

And it’s handy to have two spades, even though I hate gardening..
And…
And…
Etc

All on the basis that “it’ll be useful when I find a use for it”.

Love it. 😊

I feel your pain. We were in our last house for 20 years and the amount of stuff we took to the recycling centre and charity shops was genuinely eye watering.

The amount of stuff we had which was new, unused - or used once - and subsequently forgotten was a real opener: paint, tools, clothes, toys, toiletries, etc.

I counted the number of bags whilst we were doing “full car” runs and I am somewhat embarrassed to say that we took 160 sacks of clothes over the space of a month or so.

After that it was occasional boot loads, and I stopped counting, but it must have been close to 200 by the end. can’t believe we had space for it all to be honest.

Actually, joking aside, I volunteer at WorkAid, a charity based in Chesham, Bucks, (www.workaid.org) that sends refurbed tools to start-ups and schools/colleges mainly in Western Africa, but also in Uk.

Most of the donations come from “grandad’s sheds” and the like. I spend time cleaning, adjusting etc hand tools, making sure they work and most importantly are safe to use.

So it’s getting easier to ‘let go’ of some of the stuff in the garage. (Only some though, mustn’t go mad!).

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you lot are playing at it, try moving onto a 57ft Narrow Boat from a four bed house. We did skips not bin bags. Kept most of my tools though, in mates shed. If you haven't used or seen it in 2 years bin it.

Well in order to clear the garage out I needed to pass on to my son lots of stuff which like me he will find a use for it once, like a 5 metre scaffold tower,I used it to clad the apex of the roof over the folding doors of the new extension,it saved me a fortune as I was able to do it myself, but as I live in a bungalow I can see no further use for it,lots of plumbing and electrical stuff and quiet a few tools that I am not going to use again, loads of old paint went down the tip,2x20lt of white emulsion,no idea why we had that, but my grand daughter used it on the bare plaster in her new house, there is no small measure of satisfaction seeing just how big the garage is now.

I've been in this place for 7 years and the crap has started to build up. I recently had a significant birthday recently and my wife said "why don't you get the gazebo out". My heart sank as I knew it was stuffed in various locations behind 6 overflowing floor to ceiling shelving units in my once-pristine shed. "Oh", she added, "can you make sure the guests can get down the side passage in case we can't hear the door bell". FFS...

I reckon I was at it for three days in the end; I ended up pretty much emptying each rack one by one then sorting though all the stuff before putting back only the essentials. I got rid of loads of old paint tins, an entire box containing a series of pumps for long-gone inflatables, knackered old kids toys, two lawnmowers, a shitty gazebo and loads of bric a brac. The side passage was another excavation project with vast amounts of timber offcuts (140kg at the weigh in), two vast sheets of rotting hardboard, bits of soffit, a roll of felt and other left over roofing supplies, an old basket ball hoop, etc etc etc.

Got there in the end, had a great party and now my side passage is pristine again. I can once again walk through my 4m shed from and to end and admire the organised racking full of stuff I can find and which I'll actually use and lots of neat, labelled boxes. Pretty much as it started out 7 years ago. Hard work but satisfying.

And the next time my wife wants that gazebo up it'll take 3 hours not 3 days.

I feel your pain but also the therapy as I have to clear out and downsize 'me shed'

After 25 years in our house and a mid life update about 16 years ago we are going to spend big and get the patio, path, retaining wall etc done for next summer

And the shed has to go.

A smaller one just for lawnmower, strimmer etc and a few outdoor cushions will be found a place somewhere in the garden, but it will be a real job as it's crammed and rammed with bits and useful bobs that haven't actually had a use in 10 plus years
Oh, and spiders.....

And what I wouldn't give for a small controlled house fire to empty the garage so I could get the SLK inside.
It's the only way that's ever going to happen.

Most of everything does get taken to our very good tip which is a very good recycling centre that have their own shed where less fortunate people and charities can pick up working or half full items etc.
One good thing our Council does.....

We downsized when we moved from Warwickshire to Rutland. We downsized again when we moved to Barbados with half a container of furniture and "things". We down sized when we returned to the UK in a rural Lincolnshire cottage and again when we moved in to a small bungalow.
After all of that my shed is bulging, the loft is crammed and cupboards are full of "things"
Rubbish expands to fill the available space.
