General Motors are shutting down Holden production in Australia citing it was cost too much to remain in the "highly fragmented right-hand-drive market".
Just another sign that US giant GM is accelerating its exit from unprofitable markets as it focuses on the US, China, Latin America and South Korea. Its already sold Vauxhall/Opel to the PEUGEOT/CITROEN group in Europe
GM scraps historic Holden car brand in Australia

they used to make some hairy V6/ V8 Models till very recently

Yeah and another sign the car industry is in a bit of a mess generally with all the new legislation and low emiisoins requirements..

Shame to see Holden go, I always fancied one as a bit of a weekend car.

No RHD ICE for Blighty post Brexit from the USA then. Euro EV is our future.

It does make sense... UK, Japan, Cyprus etc (full list here: List of LHD and RHD countries ) are small markets, each one with different local regulations.

If Holden were making and selling vast numbers of cars it wouldn't really matter whether it was a RHD or LHD as long as the volumes were high enough. They aren't which starts to make it difficult. I rather suspect the issue is that Holden as such really only exists in one of those markets - and as a smaller player. GM would much rather take producton from their large volume plants and sell to Aus from outside as that makes sense.

As regards RHD being an issue - it doesn't seem to trouble German manufacturers that the Japanese market is RHD. They want access to it. And its likely that should the UK and EU fail to reach agreement that it will not be because the likes of MB, BMW, and VAG aren't lobbying the German government and the EU for a deal that gives them access to UK RHD market.

Expect Globalisation to lead to ever more concentration of volume manufacturing in just a few global locations - unless there is a significant shift in transport costs or border tarriffs to mitigate against this effect and pull back and disperse production closer to local markets.

Australia is one of the most expensive places in the world to build a car. I think it was originally announced about 2014 or 15 that they would be closing their Holden (Chev) plants down.

I thought they shut Holden and HSV production down in 2017.
They did, but they continued selling GM product built elsewhere badged as Holden. Now they're dropping the name altogether.

I suspect some of the GM product they rebadged as Holden was Opel; as they've now sold that to PSA, and that's now merged with FCA, it's probably no longer an option for GM.
