Good afternoon all, just returned from a fantastic 1600 mile trip round the country in my 97 sl320. Aside from the damn speed camera's in Scotland the trip was excellent, the car behaved impecibly and i finally got over 400 miles out of a tank (438).

When in Glasgow however i noticed a hollow clunking noise coming frm the front everythime I hit a dodgy bit of road, i.e. every 20 seconds. On some bumps no noise but on others this hollow clunk.

Not being mechanical, i'm concerned, could it be the springs or bushes?

BTW really noticed the car's prescence on the motorway especially when driving up to road hogs on outside 2 lanes :D, like magic, most of them moved without needing a hint to look in their mirrors.

ARB bushes,

Springs

Camber/castor bushes

Shock absorbers.

They are all the items that can cause knocking.

Thanks BlackC55, are these likely to be expensive to correct, I have heard some real horror stories on the price of merc suspension

It can be expensive but it depends where you go......

On a W124 the ARB bushes are £20 for a set of four. I imagine the SL parts will be similarly priced

Not going to my local stealership but to a local specialist who comes highly recommended in Bexleyheath. Went to my local stealership to ask about a part and was left waiting for 20 minutes while being ignored by everyone around me before leaving in disgust. My brother in law, who is a bmw enthusiast couldn't believe that they just ignored us like that.
