Well it’s that time again, renewal notice from M & S and it’s gone up over £100 to £860. Any recommendations? Push bikes are always the main issue for us.
I can try Saga now I’m over 50 - not sure whether to be happy about that or not!

What’s good value for one is never good value for others, however John Lewis have proven to be noticeably less than the others I’ve tried this year, typically 15-20% less than the others I tried.

Their top level cover seems a little more comprehensive and generous than the others I tried, and they don’t charge extra for paying monthly. Worth trying if shopping around.

Saga initially came out at £580 but I still have to add the bikes, and one must be over a threshold so need to call them. Will try JL though…

Used Go Compare and Swinton came out best for combined House and contents with about 20 k individual jewellery pieces specified . Actually then upgraded to a slightly more comprehensive house cover, cost just over £320 . It was a good job I did, as what started as a blocked drain , covered for max £1 k turned out to be a collapsed drain , eventually cost the insurer ( Covea - a subsidiary of the Prudential) just under £5 k , luckily claim then came under a different clause. Everything was handled by a specialist drain company, Auger, employed by the insurance company, I just paid the £350 excess. Really great service but we will see what next year’s premium is 😂

Just got my home insurance renewal through......went up by exactly.....£1!........naturally I will be bunting around for a better deal.......errr....no I won't.....got better things to do with my time to be honest!

I thought I would mention car breakdown insurance, when I was doing large mileage I used the AA or the RAC but now I am retired and doing less than 10 thousand miles a year I have used Rescuemycar, now they upped the premium from £25 to £41 ok not a fortune but called them up and said I had a quote for £33 they said we will beat that and I have another year for the old price of £25,if you do not ask you do not get.

Here are the universal rules about all insurance needs.

#1 Ensure auto renew is off on all policies
#2 Use multiple comparison sites as well as direct line
#3 Use comparisons sites via cashback sites

Hope that helps.

Also, avoid having expensive bikes! It's a real pain getting adequate cover, everything else seems quite straightforward. John Lewis for instance won't cover the expensive ones or total value.

I wonder how many people are getting sufficient cover from standard policies? Considering most policies only give 60-70k of contents, I suspect many people are under-insured
With 60-70k I could replace my contents, less the specified watches, several times over.

On consideration, it would cover the watches as well!

Im going to do a bit of a stock check over the weekend ive decided to get a half accurate figure. I had a guestimate on just the garage and i was actually quite a way off. It's amazing how the replacement cost adds up. Im going to have to be careful though, because it's also highlighted how much more "stuff" i am responsible for amassing compared to my Wife! 🤭

Downsizing is your friend!
We downsized from a 4 bed in Warwickshire to a 3-bed cottage in Rutland, then to a 2-bed flat in Rutland. We then shipped everything to Barbados into a 3-bed bungalow. When we moved back to the UK, we left everything in Barbados and started again in a 3-bed cottage in Lincs. This meant that we had to buy everything we needed, needed being the operative word!
When we made our latest, and last , move into a 2-bed bungalow, we only had those things that we had bought as necessary.
It is surprising how little that really is.
