Afternoon

I am looking at replacing our Dell Dimension 2400 with something perhaps a little quicker...

We are looking for a regular home PC - I don't play games on it, would like to download more video, a decent size screen and enough memory to keep all of our family photos for the nxt 5/7 years.

Any recommendations for under £400?!

Cheers

Do not sweat about storage space: very easy to add another disc and it is getting stupidly cheap compared to what we used to pay, for example last week I purchased a 1.5TB disc for a tad over £75.

Per the blurb that will hold:

426000 Digital Photo's (6Mpix), 600 Hours of DVD quality vids or 180 Hours of HD video.

Something like this might be worth considering.

One or 2 things to watch out for. With advances on motherboard hardware some older technologies have disappeared. Most drives are SATA now so its more difficult to use older internal hard drives or optical drives since often there are no EIDE bus connectors. [there are ways round that via external USB conversion kits] That old parallel printer port will disappear as will a floppy drive option [ a retrograde step IMHO] Just some things to be aware of. Personally I would look for a good graphics capability with a dedicate graphics board rather than the slightly cheaper integrated motherboard chip but that's just me.

Some feedback from me : several years ago (1998) I had a lodger staying with me - he bought a MESH PC - even when it was straight out of the box it wouldn't boot into windows without errors....I do hope they've improved...

I had a MESH pc many years ago, at the time it was hot poop according to all the reviews (whatever that means), then the HD went poop after a couple of years and my Dad replaced the guts with something else.

Great keyboard though, its still plugged into one of my machines today. :D

I'm getting the idea that PC Pro (I'm not sure about other mags) has some vested interest in MESH Computers - or MESH pay for the plugs...

just go to ebay and buy a cheap nasty one like mine, then download all the software u need from the pirate bay, simple and save u as fortune.

Except your new PC may be riddled with malware which you will never get rid of. don't look for any software updates from Microsoft either.:(
