I see there's a post on Honest John's site about a guy with a V reg (2000?) Accord that suffered auto-box failure at 50K miles.
Apparently Honda replaced the box FOC without even having to be asked by the customer, saying that the box shouldn't have failed after only 50K.

Wonder what MB's reaction would have been? I think it goes without saying that even if they had replaced it (which I tend to doubt), they wouldn't have done so without a *huge* fuss.

Is anyone on here aware of Mercedes generously agreeing to fund an out of warranty repair?

Ha. Fat chance of that from MB.

I am trying to recall as exactly as I can my conversation with MB customer support @ Milton Keynes HQ:

.
.
.
.
Me: Hughes have advised me my ECU has failed. I would like MB to make a contribution to the replacement.

Cust Support: Why should we contribute, it has broken? You car is not under warranty.

Me: It is an electrical compononet, it suffers no wear and tear. Is the ECU not designed to last the lifetime of the car? My car only has (now guessing 80K miles and is only 4 yrs old).

Customer Support: What do you think awarranty is for? If its outside of the warranty you have to pay. We only cover parts under warranty. Why do you think the warranty only lasts 3 years?

I gave up!

Don't give up. The warranty is 'in addition to your statutory rights'.

Part of 'your statutory rights' is that the goods should last a reasonable length of time. The difficulty is with the length of time, but, for example, for domestic appliances it's generally considered to be 5 yrs.

What you could do is have the repair done, then sue the supplier of the car (note it's the supplier that's liable, not MB UK) in the small claims court. This can be a little complicated if you're not the original owner, or the supplier has changed hands.
It doesn't cost much and big firms usually back down at the last minute for fear of being seen to lose.

Excellent service from Honda (assuming the story is true).

DCUK could learn from this.
