Hopefully future owner of E270/E320 W211, advise needed

Yeah, right. So now I'm thinking to get a rent a car for the weekend (I'll spend almost the same amount of money for train) and see as much as possible.

Still tempted from the one on Mercland, the only thing that stops me is the average mileage and the fact that the most of it was driven in last three years:

Perhaps another way to look at it is that Jay's place has been servicing it for the last 5 years. They will have a good idea about the car-if it was a bag of nails I would not be surprised if Jay disposed of it elsewhere rather than putting it on his forecourt

and if you are thinking of towing make sure it has a tow bar fitted - otherwise could be over £600 for a decent one to be fitted

Hi Sve,
All the best for your new purchase and it does sound as though you have plenty of good advice but be careful.

Earlier this year I swapped my perfectly good S320 for a 2002 E270CDI as i needed the better gas mileage. It was through a dealer with a reasonable service history. All was well until I had to leave it for a couple of months whilst abroad. On my return my car started perfectly well but would not go out of 1st gear. I had it towed to a MB specialist and it is here the problems started piling up and ended up with a bill for 2950 pounds. It will probably end up a lot higher as the garage reported extensive rust underneath and particularly at the front suspension mounts. This is on a car with with only 110,000m which used to be nothing on a Merc. I am seriously disapointed as I have had Mercs for 30yrs without any major problems.

The good news is that it now drives extremely well and on the last couple of tankfuls of careful driving I achieved 52mpg which is not to be sneezed at. I am however seriously looking at lada, at least you get what is on the packet (tongue in cheek of course).

I got it, the one above with an year of warranty. It was serviced at 99681 miles (25.06.2012) and now it just turned 110k. It was serviced only at Mercedes and mostly get it's MOT at Mercedes a well. The car was serviced every 10k miles.

Coincidence or not on my way back I got message on the cluster saying "Service F+ in 584 miles". When I entered in the Service Data menu it says:
198VF1
Weighting= 315
Miles Remaining+584
Days remaining+275

I called the dear to ask him and he said that maybe it wasn't reset when they got it serviced last time. Waiting for his call tomorrow morning after he speak with the garage.

I'm aware that it should be serviced at some point, but I was hoping to drive it for at least an year considering the low mileage I'll be doing.

You can get a list of items from the service menu. Item numbers are:

replace compressor poly v-belt
replace air cleaner insert
turn air filter element by 180 degrees (only on 1st service 3)

4 = every 60k km / 2 years option 580 aircon - change filter

5 = every 60k km / 2 years option 581 aircon - change all 3 filters

6 = every 2 years bodywork check
underside check

7 = every 5 years clean sunroof mech

13 = at each service engine oil and filter change

Troon, thanks for your detailed answer. Disks and pads seemed to be already replaced. No trailer hitch, no sunroof. Troon many of these could already be replaced at the last garage visit, right ? Although the current mileage is 177399 km and I guess most of "every 60k" and "every 30k" should be done.
