I'm being bombarded with offers to sell the name of my out-of-town house from a chap who's recently had a vulgar new mini-palace built further up the road. Seems he's determined to have the name because he believes his house is now the "grandest" (his word!) in the road and should therefore be named after it (eg: Baker Road/Baker House, but not "Baker").

He's now bidding silly money despite my having told him in no uncertain terms that it's simply not for sale. I thought I'd seen it all, but this is a new one on me. Anyone else experienced this?

No, but this could be the start of another long-running thread....:

'Anyone seen any good names on houses lately?'

    :D

Surely he can call his house what he wants, regardless of what yours is called?

Yes, but it would be confusing to have two 'The White Cottage' on the same road...

So in fact he would be paying MOCAŠ for not using his house name

'Baker Palace' has a nice ring to it. Sell him 'Baker House' then change yours to Palace :D

The name is recognised by the Post Office. They won't recognise two houses with the same name in the same road (for obvious reasons).

Mocas could continue to use "Baker House" and let the other guy use "Baker lodge"...

    ... or perhaps "Gardeners Cottage"...

    Mocas,

Why not suggest he calls it "vulgar new mini-palace"

Send him a letter, delivered by Royal Mail, addressed as such.

    He'll get the idea...

It's very obvious - I was just pointing out that (in law) I assume he could do it if he wanted to?

I can see the problem though - we are at (name) Lane and joining our lane is (same name) Road. it does cause grief, though we do enjoy the free pizzas.

:) Nice idea, but he's clearly got his mind set on 'Baker' House. I don't think he has a sufficiently honed sense of irony to call his monstrosity a lodge (it's about three times the size of my place).

    Or...

    Sell him 'Baker House'.

Then name yours 'The Original Baker House'.

The Post Office will be satisfied.

I suppose he could put up any sign he wants, but he clearly wants the legitimacy of his house having the definitive name for the road. He'll have to want...

He'll probably petition the Council to change the road name.

But mine is the original 'Baker' House, literally. It was the first house built in the road, and has a long-standing family connection. I've no intention of adulterating that to satisfy the whim of some Johnny-come-lately with more money than sense.

I know a company owner that built a substantial house with land and called it "The Hovel"

His latest offer was in the low seven figures, Sterling. The answer's still no.

    What's in a name?

Where I live, all the 'Basement Flats' have strangely disappeared over the past fifteen years.... replaced by 'Garden Flats'.

I remember visiting a colleague once whose address was something very unassuming, like 34a Crabtree Avenue (but not that). I was more-or-less expecting it to be a maisonette. I couldn't have been more wrong.
