Hi, how can I tell if a noise is the water pump?

Recently I've noticed an odd noise in the engine area but cannot pinpoint it. Its a sort of "hissing wheezing" sound  A pal thinks it could be the waterpump on its way out. In fact he noticed it first . . . now I cannot get it out of my mind

No oil or water loss, no higher than normal oil temp. I've followed various threads about water pumps but nothing to help me so far - Anyone have any ideas about what to look at please?

The whining noise common on a c class is liekly to be the tensioner. Most of the 202 models suffer from this... The part is inexpensive and fairly easy to replace. Your car would be about the right age for it to go...

If you want to tell where a noise is coming from you can take something like a big screwdriver, press the metal end against the offending part of the engine and press the handle end against your ear. It's very crude, but it works a treat, just make sure you don't get it caught in any spinning belts/fans etc :)

Could be the exhaust manifold gasket you will hear it better if you put the engine under load :)

Could noise be my tensioner???

I developed a noise a couple of days ago and on searching the forum for possible causes/fixes I quickly came upon this thread.

I'm getting a whining/whirring noise after the vehicle has warmed up (not when cold) and it seems to be coming from the belt area at the front of the engine. The noise gets louder the more acceleration you give (whether in D or P) and is noisy again when you lift off the gas pedal and decelerate. My local mechanic has it booked in for Monday and after having a very quick look today suggested his first guess would be the alternator.

I've had no battery or starting problems, there have been no battery warning lights at any time and the car runs as well as ever... just noisy!!!

I'm hoping it's not the alternator... could it be the tensioner??? The car only has 47k on the clock???

I reckon the tensioner is favourite, especially from earlier suggestions.

I'll be looking at mine this weekend . . .

I replaced my auxiliary belt the other day which was really easy to do, just place a socket on the tensioner pully bolt and pull upwards to relieve the tension on the belt. My point being then you can slip the belt off and spin & wobble the pulleys to check for play. I needed a bit of washing up liquid to get the new belt on though.

Yep screwdriver method for me too, works a treat.
