Hello agian,

how common are the computer errors?

is it worth buying cable, computer to fix the errors alone at home?

my Mercedes just had a computer error, ambient lights stopped working on the left side and middle, only right side is working. I am not really worried as this was happening with my 67plate e class. I know from experience that they clear, fix alone, but just how common it is. And can I do anything about it to prevent it?Usually I deal with this type of problem by turning off the engine , lock the car and go to sleep , in the morning is all up and working again. thank you

it’s still in warranty, take it to the nearest dealership.

Have you tried going into the COMAND settings and changing the ambient light colour to see if it make any difference?
You can always switch back to the colour you like afterwards and see if it stays on.

I doubt there is anything you can do at home with a code reader to fix this.
As its your first Mercedes, the best thing you can do is get yourself familiar with a good independant specialist who can fix any minor or major problems using OEM parts.
The saving you will make on labour costs alone will surprise you. They can also update your service record just as the main dealer does.
They also have the specialist diagnostic tool (STAR) which is invaluable when finding faults.

Wayne Gates in Harrow NW comes highly recommended in the capital.

I did try to change, the colours.
I expect ambient lights to be back on, next time turn the engine on. :)
I am guessing,I will have to do a little research on the specialists near my house.

Luckily , after I left the car for 8 hours without driving, touching the lights got back to life. I did visit the dealer, they asked me to leave the car for a day , but I'm just too busy and need it for work. they even suggest that may need to replace all the lights. thank god all working again, I guess it just a common problem with Mercedes. I'am very pleased my Merc fixed himself alone:). there is a option in the settings for automatic updates, but when asked the dealer he said "not yet in near future"... which was strange ..basically I thought my Mercedes received update that's why lights stuck.

Sounds like a hardware fault anyway. Probably coming back sooner or later.

I think that the only automatic updates (i.e. over the air) are of the mapping data, and then only for one region rather than the whole Europe database.

this what came to my mind today, as I was browsing MercedesMe , there was paid option for live traffic updates with automatic updates. Also I think Mercedes is connected to the internet as there is option for wifi in the car. :p

I would have thought you should be getting live traffic updates until warranty expires.

I did on mine until warranty expired i then paid for the updates.

If they want it for a day then book it in, they will give you a courtesy car while they have yours.

Hi OP. This is a virtually new Mercedes Benz , right ? Take it back to them , get a courtesy car off them and tell them to call you when it's fixed. Simple.

In my experience, stored error codes are quite common on Mercedes passenger cars. Every Mercedes I have scanned had at least several error code stored - most are benign, and wouldn't be visible unless through a scanner. However, on one Mercedes I scanned, there were ten's of error codes related to the CAN bus, probably caused by a single faulty controller that regularly takes out the CAN bus. I would avoid buying such a car unless diagnosed and fixed properly by a qualified mechanic.

More worrying, my 2016 W205 recently threw up an error code on the engine flap which triggered the car into limp mode. MB RAC attended to clear the code but couldn't find any real issues with the flaps.

I would be inclined to recommend MB owners to keep a cheap scanner (e.g. iCarsoft) in their boot to avoid a random error throwing their car into limp mode and then waiting ages for the RAC to turn up to clear the code so that they can resume their journey!

I would say that on average I see about one error per year coming-up which appears to be random... and once deleted never comes back. That my experience over 12 years of ownership (2 MB cars).
