As the question above says ....

Now, I didn't set it up , it was set up by Mrs Toads bro , who is an IT type ....

So, be easy with me ..... ;)

you will have to gain access into your wireless manager or router as the case may be, usually using an IP address xxx.yyy.zzz.aaa

You may or may not need a password depending on your ISP and then if you have administrator privileges you can then change whatever you like depending on the options you see in your manager.
You can get the IP protocol from the provider.
Sorry bout the words

Hmmmmm....

So it's not just a question of clicking something and a box comes up with ' Old name ***** ' and another one under it that says ' Enter new name ***** '

Probably a bit out of my league then ......

Well if it was that easy and it was wireless enabled, any tom ,mick and jones will be accessing your network as most of them are configured to shout their SSID numbers by default

It certainly is not out of your league. if you can drive a car then you can do it. you just need to get access thats all.

Sorry to sound ignorant , but how do i find out the IP address and get access then ?

My laptop connects automatically to it so i have no idea of the password ...

You can obtain it from who set it up as that would be the administrator or from the ISP if it is stil in the default settings.

you still need to get into the network settings to do that

If you use a laptop to connect automatically then your network card would probably have all the details you want . just try accessing that first.

It is WPA encrypted according to the 'View Wireless Networks' thing .... :o

Without wishing to offend you, I am thinking this might be better waiting until someone can show you.

IF you venture further, please make the change from a wired connection....

ssid service set identifier used to identify packets on a wireless network.

Graham , you don't need to be all PC with me ! I won't get offended , don't worry !

I was beginning to think the same thing !

I already have a wireless network installed at home and it all works hunky dory , i just don't like the name ....

What is the make and model of your router? Do you have an ethernet (network) cable handy to connect laptop to router?

Got to: Start - Run- and type in cmd

When you get the dos box up, type in ipconfig /all

This will bring up a load of ip addresses and info. Look for the one which is called default gateway it will probably be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.254

When you have the address open Internet Explorer or Firefox, whatever and type this IP Address into the address bar.

That should open the home page of the router assuming no password is set. Then look for the SSID and change it there. However, if you've change it then you may need to redo the settings on your wireless cards on the computers as they look for the original name.
