How Do I Fit An Antenna To My NAV DVD?

So I think I know the problem now with my navigation- a faulty antenna, so I´ve bought a universal magnetic one and plan to run it up to the parcel shelf in the back.

I´m looking at the DVD unit (2004 E320) in the back, and I cannot think of a way of getting to it other than to take off the boot trimming!!! Which looks an extremely difficult job.

Is their an easier way of doing this? Could someone tell me exactly where the blue Nav antenna socket is?

Thanks.

Right, managed to get the boot trim away without destroying anything!!

Could someone look at the diagrams here, and show me where the Nav Antenna needs to go?

COMAND APS Retrofit (E,CLS)

Do I have to unscrew all the casing, or is it possible to access if you know where it is?

The connectors are coded to avoid making the wrong connection. At least with the MB cables. The universal GPS aerials tend to be less reliable than OEM ones.
The recommended placing for the aerial is under the dash, next to the instrument cluster. But I can't see why it wouldn't work under the parcel shelf, as long as its not metal?

What I meant was I don´t know where to plug the Universal Antenna into the DVD unit / tower in the boot.

I heard someone mention it was a blue socket, but there seem to be several blue cables.

Thanks for your help!!

From the link above:

On the Saloon model, Install the GPS antenna under the rear parcel shelf near the entrance to the boot. (just stick it place with some velcro and make sure it is pointing up. It goes on top of the metal part of the shelf but under the material part - the signals pass through plastic/material and glass.
Connect the black connector on the GPS antenna to the connector on the navigation processor loom. (or if you are using a non genuine GPS antenna, then it will connect directly to the navigation processor later).

Thanks for that advice.

I´ve managed to slide the DVD player out, and with great difficulty take the blue GPS antenna connector out.

If I have a universal Antenna, where do I plug this? It won´t fit into the actual DVD player, so where should I plug it?

Excuse the fact that I´m not up to speed with the technical lingo, so as simply as possible would be appreciated!!

Many thanks!

I would guess you need a gps with the same connector or something to convert it to the connection the mercedes one uses unless there is another input for gps antenna. The article mentions non genuine antenna but these are still available with the same connector as the mercedes one.

After all that, I´ve changed over the Antenna, and it´s still not working. So going to bite the bullet and take to Mercedes tomorrow.

Any ideas what could be the problem? It´s not recognising any satellites at all.

It takes a while to find the satellites once you connect the antenna up. Leave it on for about 15 minutes and see what it finds then.

Indeed it does, put it on map and then drive around for 15 mins and see what it does....

When I installed Comand in my car, the satnav thought the car was in Sweden of all places!

Does your system say the car is somewhere it isn't or just looks stupid?

Or does it not declare any position?

As others have said, it takes a few minutes for Comand etc to get its bearings once powered up, say with a new antenna, so take her out and mooch about.

One last thing.... does your new antenna have a clear view of the sky? Soz if this is a stupid question. Any metal, even the metallized film in some windscreens (Renault?) will block signal.

It doesn´t say any postition at all. Been out a lot, but never picked up any satellites.

I hate to take it to Mercedes, because I´m having nightmares about the bill, but out here in Spain, I don´t really trust anyone else.

They have already said to me that I should only use an official antenna (but they would say that wouldn´t they!!)

The official antennas work a lot better than non MB ones.
