Hi all,
I have read alot of threads here talking about MPG and they increase in city drive and decrease in high ways.
Can anyone help me figure out how to calculate it?
My MB is E220 W124 made 1995.
One more question, what is 'MOT' you all guys talking about? sorry for this but am not English so it may be normal to English people to know 'MOT'.is it when renewing your driving license every year? here in Kuwait they have no routine for this,it is a matter of luck :)
Thanks

MOT is an annual vehicle inspection ... required (by law) from 3 years old.

MPG is given on the trip computer of most M-Bs. You can work it out more accurately yourself:

1. fill tank to the brim, write down mileage.
2. drive car.
3. refill tank to brim, write down mileage.

So then you know how much fuel was used to do the mileage between steps 1 & 3. Convert litres to gallons, the MPG is miles divided by gallons.

I think MPG is just a UK/US calculation, mostly in Europe they talk about litres/100km.

Also, it's worth knowing the UK gallons are not the same as US gallons.

What unit of measurement do you use for speed/distance and fuel volume in Kuwait.
Is it KM or miles for distance and litres or gallons (either US or Imperial) for fuel volume.

More importanlty, being in Kuwait why are you bothered..??

worth checking your cars speedo against a GPS as well as most are not really accurate enough for MPG calculations.

Come on, how little does a litre of fuel cost in Kuwait?
Make us really mad.

The speed reading shoud be slightly high but the mileage should be accurate as it is a mechanical function.
Be interesting to check though.

Mileage is just the integal of speed (and speed the differential of distance - depending which you are measuing). Surely both are calculated by ECUs/Cluster - why have a separate device when it can be done in software.

Incidently I checked my speed against GPS the other day - almost bang on at 75 (speedo marginally high, but didn't even look like 1mph to me). Interestingly speed limit I had the speed limiter on and set to 78 at the time - so I suspect the ECU thought it was doing 78 and the speedo dial is just reading a little low compared to the ECU.

Anyone else compared speedo to the limiter readings?

In Kuwait we use kilometers for distance and liter for fuel.
how much a gallon in Liters? I believe 1 g = 3.x L.
Is that correct?
for my concern about fuel consumption,I wanted to make sure my car is working fine.
For fuel prices here (95 unleaded) costs 0.16 GBP (great britain pounds)
that is for today's GBP price in central bank :)
Is this price close to your prices?

1 gallon = 4.54l, and no, price is not close to ours....... About £0.85 per litre here

So 1 Imperial Gallon is 4.54 Litres

To convert MPG to L/KM
1 mile per gallon = 2.82481053 litres / kilometer
2 miles per gallon = 1.41240527 litres / kilometer
3 miles per gallon = 0.94160351 litres / kilometer

and so on, multiply by 100 if Litres/100km

Unleaded 95 ron is around 88 pence at the moment, of which approx 65 pence plus is tax.

A UK gallon is 4.546 litres, 1 mile is 1.6 kms.
A quick conversion from km per litre is to times it by 2.83

16ppl :eek:I don't even want to think about that :(

if any of you have E220, how much KPL does it have?
(Engine type 111).
Also how much KPL for 300E (6 inline cylinders in the black head engine).?
Thanks

P.S. : There is a new type of fuel introduced recently named 'ultra' and it recommended by MB local dealer here, price is more expensive(0.221 GBP).
I tried it once and I noticed longer kilometers in the same amount of fuel,so it is more efficient and engine friendly than 95.

I think modern speedo's are a lot better than older ones for accuracy, most used to read fast by a fair margin, if you DO check it against a GPS, make sure your on a flat road, going up or downhill will make the GPS read slower than your car as its reading speed by distance covered across the earths surface while your speedo reads from the distance the wheels cover on the roads surface, i'm not sure if the ones that read height above sea level correct for that.

I've checked the limiter setting against the speedo reading on the E300TD.
Usually within + or - 1 mph.
Going down hill the car speeds up and the speedo indicates this.

I do use the limiter when in strange territory
(for obvious reasons)

Cheers.

Here's the MB BROCHURE mpg chart for the various models at the time. I expect the e280 figures would close to the 300E consumption.
