Hello all I have a 2006 E 280 CDI, it's a face lift model.Iwould like to replace the pads and discs on the front. I have got nervous after reading some threads about SBC kicking in and losing a finger etc. how can I tell if my car has the SBC brakes, I think they stopped using this system in 2006, is there any way I can be sure, many thanks

The facelift model of the W211 E280 does not have SBC - you're safe, don't worry. What makes you think your fingers were at risk?

I need to replace the pads, but some threads talk about the SBC kicking in and activating the calipers and even pushing the pistons out etc.

Some more advice please, looking at the pads two of the pads have the hole for the wear indicator nearer to the pad base plate than the other two, they all have holes in them, thanks

I don't recall seeing a thread on here about that and as I have an S211 with SBC I usually read most related posts. How long ago was that?

Sorry - can't help you there. I don't do DIY on mine, much too technically advanced for my very limited capabilities. I take mine to my local indy. I'm sure somebody who knows will be along later.

Make sure that you have some new brake pins before starting and a proper pin punch as they can be stuck and need cutting out.

I had to cut mine out and seems to be a fairly usual problem so a dremel type tool is very handy too.

I've read something similar within the last two years but I don't know if an old wives tale or genuine.

I can well imagine some people have been caught out though.

I have the same E280 facelift and I did the pads and discs recently, fairly easy to do but like someone said earlier the pins can be a bit stuck to hammer out but once they are out then you have the issue of the disc that may be stuck on the hub with corrosion. I eventually had to remove the bearing hub and hammer out the disc as it was badly corroded in. I replaced with PAGID discs from EPC and used ATE pads for the front and PAGID for the rear. Took about 4hrs in totally but then again that was my first time doing it on a merc. If it's any help watch a few videos on YOUTUBE on how to do it before undertaking the job coz that's what I did and found it very useful
