A fast car
Hi , not as fast as you think !
.
Years ago I had a customer who was a car nut. On a visit was to his office he was not his usual self.

What's wrong I asked him ?

My Scooby is crap from the lights ( is was based on a Pro drive 400 with all the toys and greatly improved engine out put )

He explained to me a spotie youth appeared in a Ford Escort XL at the lights and through out a challenge by revving his engine , he accepted the challenge and was left for dead.

Moving on , lights at the end of city limits he though have him at the lights , not a chance and this kid was gone never to be seen again.

Has that happened to you ?

Be honest !

Thing is you never know what anyone has done to their car, I have never been a fan of traffic light grand prix as 4WD always comes out on top

I got loads of friends with mega powerful cars that look completely stock. One R reg Corsa left my C63 for dead and I really don’t care because A. It was 100% modified and B. The C63 is fast enough for me

As fast as you could drive it.
95% of the time the driver runs out of talent before the car runs out of performance.
And now you get young drivers in some seriously quick cars!

Many years ago, I got left for dead by a Daff 66,( I think ), whilst in my nicely running 3.0 Capri.
started me thinking about “sleepers” back then; 1981.

My E55, S211 is un-badged, nobody really notices it so get no “offers” which suits me..

Loads of sleepers out there I know a few C63 that run different turbos and are around 800bhp mark mental !

At the lights in Birmingham in around 1977/78 delivering a 450 SEL 6.9 after service.
Pulled up to the lights and a viva or chevette - can’t remember which pulled up next to me gunning for a race.
With almost seven litres of fuel injected waftiness, it was no contest.
I floored it, and he left me in a cloud of my own tyre smoke. I just couldn’t get the power down quickly without spinning the wheels.
Lesson learned. It’s not what you got, it’s how you use it.

Was it an Escort Cosworth?

To launch even a heavily modified 2WD Escort from rest - more quickly than an AWD Impreza with 400 BHP - would be remarkable. But to be left for dead would require something very very special, even if the Escort driver was a pro and the Impreza driver was about as talented as me.

No matter what I’m driving, I very rarely have someone line up against me at the traffic light Grand Prix. I drive like a daisy anyway so it would be wasted on me.

The few I remember were when I was driving the same family-car SUV, and involved a C 63 AMG, a McLaren 675 LT, and BMW 320d - all with the same result.

I do remember following a Seat Cupra off the lights and thinking that it was fast with a capital F, so I dare say that he surprised a few people with his turn of speed.

Hi Bobby Dazzler , we are talking many many years ago ago but my customer was really annoyed. I don't think it was a Cosworth because I don't think he would have fallen for the challenge.

He liked to win !

From memory you could install an 1800 BDA engine in an Escort but BDA engines of the time did not deliver that type of power.

The early standard Twin Cam Escorts produced 105 BHP.

The fastest road going European Ford at that time was highly modified Corsair GT 2 door with a detuned formula 2 engine.

The conversion was carried out by Lotus in 1965.

The official name of the car was Lotus Corsair.

I had a ride in the car as a school boy and even allowing for my dad's car is faster your dad's car this was quick.

Going back to the original thread we will never know what engine was in that car.

Again allowing for memory we are talking cars in the 1980s.

It's going down memory lane for me.

We have a guy who attends our monthly meets in what looks like an old Ford Orion............running a 350BHP Cosworth lump and running gear. That surprises a few people if they haven't spotted the slightly lowered suspension and wide tyres.

There is also a guy my age (mid 50's) localish to me with a Golf R running just over 400BHP that is utterly mad off the line and just about everywhere else to be fair. I've had a couple of chats with him and he just loves the car for it's reliability and plain looks but smirk's whenever anyone in a performance car tries to "impress" him as he generally wipes the floor with them. I've followed him along some roads I know very well in my 507 on warm days and just can't get near him.

As said above a lot of it is knowing how to get the power you have down on the tarmac effectively, but having a "sleeper" has to be great fun

I think I have assumed the wrong car. When you said “Scooby” “Prodrive 400”, the car I had in mind was an Inprezza from the late noughties (ish), but that’s 20 years too late!

Doesn’t matter if you have a P1, Huayra, La Ferrari etc. You will never ever catch a modded Golf.
I remember my dads story after he picked his 928s from the Stuttgart factory in 1980. He says, “I’m doing 100mph on the autobahn heading for Holland and something kept flashing me from a distance behind. I moved over thinking police but , it was a Mk1 Golf GTI at warp 9 being chased by a 930 Turbo. “
Needless to say we’ve had many a modded Golf on the driveway ever since. In fact, this is the first time in years we actually don’t. On the hunt for a good Mk8 Golf R deal now.

Had a Calibra 4x4 turbo from '94 - '97 which was superchipped and made 250 bhp on the dyno, not bad for the era. Swapped the boot badge to a 2.0i. Very quick not just off the line but all the way to 150 ... in the days of the pre- speed trap M26.

Now everyone wants to race my bright red C4 Corvette, which is much slower ... if only they'd do it with the CL. 😂
