Hi

I am selling my car soon. However i want to keep my private plate.

I will be selling the car BEFORE i get/look for the next one, so i guess i will have to put it on retention.

How long does it take to remove the current plate?

say if BUYER X buys the car on Monday. Can i go to the DVLA office on Tuesday and put new plates on ready for collection Tuesday PM ?

or should i just get the plates changed over before i even market the car for sale to save hassle? i need top price for the car so its possible i will have to hold onto it until it sells at the price i need.

cheers

derek

It would pay you to put the plate on retention now ( £25) as the process can take 7-10 days and cant be done at a local office.

And as you know you must own both the number and the car before you can do it

You can get the form at any post office and you need to send the MOT as well as the tax disc

I think the fee is £105 as you have to pay the assignment fee at the same time - I recall that you can get it done while you wait - just talking to a mate , he said the original plates had been reissued to his car so it was just a matter of bolting the old plates back on.

yeh, fee is around £105, you can go to the dvla office to apply for the old one to be put back on, they will then assign the new one, usually in 2-3 days, which gives them time to transfer the Tax disc and Mot to the original number plate, and you just have to wait for the log book come through.

Ive sold plenty of cars and made a reciept stating as soon as recieve the log book, il foward it on.

3 weeks if you post the forms - or there and then at a DVLA office. £105 is right.

Not sure on the pricing now but I agree with Malcolm. I recently lost a sale because the buyer could not wait the minimum 2 weeks to have the plate re-assigned.
Once the plate is on retention it is only a matter of hours have it back on your new car.

They print out both in two minutes while you wait (at least at our local one they do)

Maybe used to be , or maybe dependent on local office but they can do it while you wait.

OK if you have a car to put it on the fee is £80 if not the fee is £105

it is the retention certificate that cost £25

They say on their web site that it has to be sent away, I had to

http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/home/en/FAQ/

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motorin...cle/PersonalisedRegAndNumberPlates/DG_4022575

and this lot have different advice - you can certainly do it while you wait at our local office , maybe some of the offices may not have the facility

Malcolm is the only one that is right here.

No DVLA local office will do a retention/transfer over the counter anymore.. this service was slowly stopped at all offices over the last few years

Even if you take it there, it will be a minimum of 5 working days before completion...

If they wish to inspect your car, this process can take up to 1 month.. (1 in 10 transfers are inspected at random)

I know this process inside out as i do around 2-3 a week...

Send the forms off recorded delivery and dont bother advertising the car until you have the paperwork back....

The full log book will follow, but this can take up to 6 weeks... typically 3 weeks though...

A month ago - went through the process when looking for a Maserati only for the deal to fall through at the last minute.

Thank you Jay. The £25 that I put up was correct to put it on retention, the transfer fee is £80 making a total of £105 if you do it all at once.

hmm thats interesting as ive been told there are none left in the UK... maybe they are bending the rules or are due to stop soon..

Wimbledon DVLA are anally retentive. The Scots don't seem to have the self-important attitude from what I can gather. I'm sure you're right for the most part.

Most dealers take the papers to their local office as it is faster than sending to Swansea as it is sorted locally so that it ends up in the right department.

It took 8 days when I did mine

I've had it done in 2 days before (in august this year) but that was the MB dealer doing it for me at their local office.
